Don Q stakes a claim in Texas

Puerto Rico-based Destilerнa Serrallйs, Inc. has opened a stateside headquarters in the Lone Star state.

The Ponce company, which produces its flagship product Don Q rum, has set up a U.S. headquarters in the Dallas-suburb of Irving, Texas. The company was founded by the Serrallйs family in 1865.

The Irving office will serve as the national headquarters for all U.S. employees and will be the permanent base for a staff of four, a spokesman for the company told the Dallas Business Journal.

The company said in a statement it chose Dallas because of the city’s strategic centralized location, which will help the company better serve major markets in the U.S., the Dallas Business Journal reported.

“The opening of the U.S. office marks a turning point in Destilerнa Serrallйs Inc.’s commitment to expanding the reach of its flagship brand DQ in the U.S. market. We are thrilled to be re-introducing the heritage, quality and value of one of the world’s finest rum to the U.S.,” said John Eason, vice president and national sales manager. “We have the fortunate task of bringing the No. 1 rum from Puerto Rico, the land of rum, to an ever more discerning consumer.”

Some of the rums produced under the Don Q brand include Don Q. Cristal, Don Q Gold, Don Q. Aсejo, Don Q Grand Aсejo and Don Q Limуn.

Serrallйs USA said it’s in the process of introducing new brands: Don Q Mojito and Don Q Coco.

this gives me great joy, its Don Q that started it all for me. Just wish they wouldn't get into the flavors...doesn't seem profitable with Bacardi locking up the market and cruzan picking up the scraps.

I'm not the biggest fan of fruit or nut flavored rum either, but the Don Q Coco and Limon impressed me at the Taste of Rum Fest in San Juan recently. Both were bright in flavor and had less sweetness than most I have found in the genre. I have added both to my shelf.

Whether they can compete with the "big boys" in the USA Mainland remains to be seen. I'm rooting for them!

I have recently become such a great fan of Don Q Grand Aсejo that I will gladly take the flavored to get the premium. BTW, a good flavored rum can be an integral ingredient in some good drinks.

I hear you rum runner, I've never passed on a taste of rum from previous prejudices and indeed look forward to new stuff, good and bad. Rumdog has a good point in that if it takes the flavored to get a better supply on the aged its worth it.
