well, if it's true that molasses cures just about everything, then drinking a bit rum everyday will probably extend your life.

Old remedies that claimed to cure everything often included molasses and herbal extracts, dissolved in a tincture base of alcohol (rum).

Has anyone here made a tincture rum using their favourite herb?

With it's social acceptability increasing, medicinal properties being recognised and seemingly imminent decriminalisation - is it the right time to start talking more openly about such uses?

I do not smoke, having given up years ago - however I refuse to be dictated to by governments on what I can and cannot do with my body and would certainly consider making a delicious rum tincture for occasional recreational or medicinal use.

Anyone share my philosophy and are willing to share their experiences or recipes?

If not, then never mind. Do not think bad of me for asking.

If this subject is a step too far for the forum - please delete it, I will understand and hold no bad feelings about it and on my part no remorse.

There is a huge difference between molasses and distilled spirits. Molasses for example contains much more of the nutrients found in the sugar cane and soil. Rum, on the other hand, has only trace amounts of things like sulfur, iron, potassium and other minerals.

Infusing herbs in alcohol dates back to the first distillates which were used for medicinal purposes. The concept is simple, put herbs and/or spices in a container of strong alcohol. This generally works better with alcohol at more than 50% alcohol by volume.

There are at least a few threads on this forum about spicing rum.

When I dream up a better job, I'm going to take it. In the meantime, the research continues.

Being involved in health care, I can say that any herb in an alcohol solution is better absorbed than just a tea for example.

Soak yer rusted tools, parts, engine blocks (if you've got enough molasses) in molasses and water and it removes rust. Betcha didn't know that.
Never pass a bar with your name on it.
