Default Rum to give a scotch drinker?

I have a good friend who loves her Dewar's 12 year scotch each night for a nightcap. I've been trying to get her to try rum. My question: what would be a good gift of rum for a scotch lover to try. I'd like to keep the price reasonable as I'm not at all sure she'll like it.

I've thought of Mount Gay Extra Old, and I read somewhere that Appleton Special was blended with whiskey in mind, but honestly, I don't drink scotch (or whiskey) so I really don't have a clue.

Thanks.

Thumbs up

I'd suggest the El Dorado 15. Excellent aged rum with nice oakey highlights and flavor. Drink neat or with no more than two cubes CHEERS !!

I would suggest trying the Cruzan Single Barrel. I find this has taste and finish similiar to some of the Scotches I have had.

Do you know how she takes her Dewars? Cubes of ice, neat, with water etc?

Aside from Dewars, do you know a second favorite or what else she might like?

Sorry, I have no idea how she takes her Dewars... we'll have to assume neat or with a couple cubes.

Perhaps my remembrance of scotch has dimmed with devotion to rum, but Cockspur 12 is recalled as having a scotch-like finish.

I do not know if you have agricoles available, but Clement VSOP might be one, or the Mount Gay XO is a good choice.

Maybe you could ease it on her by selecting a Single Malt that was finished in a rum cask.

Glenfiddich 21 year Havana Reserve (if you are across the water and can find it) - the non Havana Cask 21 is pretty good but I preferred the original which allegedly utilized spent Cuban rum barrels and was barred from the US market - something to do with some stupid embargo.

Springbank has a couple of rum finished releases too.

Ladies and gents, thanks. I did find another thread here that mentioned Pampero, and several promoted Matusalem Gran Reserva. Mount Gay Extra Old was the most frequently recommended.

I want to buy her a rum, not a rum finished scotch, and last, price IS an object, sure would like to keep it around $25 if not less, especially as she may not like it.

Since I know rum pretty well, it might help too if those of you who know scotch can describe the common aromas, tastes and finishes.

Carry on...
