What was wrong with using Mount Gay Eclipse as a mixer? Basically what I'm thinking is that now we just have another mixer, only different color and less flavour. By the way, how did you hear about this new rum?

I read about it in Febuary in the March issue of Caribbean Travel & Life (Page 26). Today I saw it being stocked at one of my local International Markets.

Didn't I also see in one of these threads (or maybe read it someplace else) that MG was discontinuing the vanilla and mango flavored rums?

Mmmm not sure about why they'd introduce this new light mixer type except maybe they think they are missing the boat of the "young hip crowd" that prefers their rum in a mixed drink and want to compete on that level?

Mount Gay had the Special Reserve, that was a white rum. I cant remember what it tasted like anymore, as I havent tried it in many months. If I remember, it had notes of sugar cane and bananas to it. I wonder if this white will be similar to the special reserve.

I would think maybe they introduced this to compete with Bacardi's Standard Clear/White/Silver Rum. I am a fan of Mount Gay- I look forward to trying out this new Rum. It may just be a clear version of their standard Eclipse, not sure. Their is a "buzz" about this new Eclipse.

Yes, those rums are history so if you loved them grab them while you can. They didn't do well in the market or among the usual suspects.

I wouldn't say that they are trying to compete with Bacardi but rather to offer a better white rum for white rum cocktails like daiquiris and mojitos. From my perspective bartenders and a lot of consumers either drink Bacardi or anything else.

The new white rum from Mount Gay is very different compared to the old Special Reserve which had a slight tint to it. I was very disappointed with the Special Reserve, my expectation was too high, which replaced a very good Mount Gay white rum that was being bottled in the early nineties.

It is my impression that the powers that be at Mount Gay finally got it that they needed to go back to what they did best fifteen years ago. They dropped the substandard flavors and Special Reserve and are now offering a good aged and filtered white rum. I missed my opportunity to taste it a couple of weeks ago in NY when a snow storm shut down the city but will write more as soon as swallow some of this new rum.

Mount Gay Refined Eclipse has a lot more smoky oak flavor than most people want in a white rum. This evening I reached for a white rum over a young, dark smoky rum for a cocktail and enjoy the lighter citrus notes without the heavier wood flavor of many dark rums.
