Default Captain Morgan's Private Stock

The liquor store here has brought this in as a limited time available product for spring. What is the verdict on this stuff? Has anyone tried it?

From what I hear, it's better than, say, Captain Morgan's, but I think you're still better off with Sailor Jerry at about two thirds the price. To me, at least, there is something contradictory about premium spiced rum, since the whole reason you spice rum is to make bad rum more palatable.
Cheers - S

I'll second that... spend the money on Sailor Jerry instead. IMO better product than standard Cap'n or Private Stock.

Good spiced rum isn't made with bad rum. There are some bad spiced rums but the idea isn't just to make bad rum palatable.

The quality of the base rum is just one of the factors that ultimately determines the quality of a spiced rum. The quality of the spicing ingredients is another factor.

Foursquare Spiced Rum from Barbados is one of the best commercially produced spiced rums. It is no longer sold in the US, but it continues to be made from without sugar cane syrup, a common ingredient in spiced rums. Cruzan Clipper is another good spiced rum, which is no longer available in the states. It was made with 2 year old rum, certainly not bad rum.

I've tried Captain Morgans Private Stock, and didnt like it. It tasted like vanilla extract. It's VERY good in Coca Cola...... but to sip it is like breaking into my wife's cooking baking supplies

Ditto. Had a bottle of CM Private Stock and didn't find it as "good" as the regular Captain Morgan.

I heartily dislike the entire Captain line. All are far too sweet for me.

If you see some Foursquare on a shelf, grab it, it's probably the last you're going to see of that one for a while. At least until the Foursquare distillery gets over gearing up to produce those great Tommy Bahama rums. Seems they have shifted their focus to their big customer. I'm disappointed but then distillers have to go where the money is to stay profitable.
