O.K. so I finally let temptations get the best of me. I opened a bottle of One Barrel yesterday. For what it is, and what it cost, I was fairly impressed.

This is my first actual experience. I've heard others say it is a "great buy", but no-one that I recall described it as a bottle full of baked goodies. Wondering if the bottle I have is the norm.

I think One Barrel is a fantastic rum. I remember when I first tried it, I had about a dozen people watching for my reaction (it was a Christmas gift, so my wife's family was waiting to see what "the rum guy" thought). It's soooo tasty. Not a good choice for the person that hates sweet and worships at the altar of dryness, but an excellent rum.

My only problem is that the sweetness can start to get to you after a while. It's like eating a really rich desert...you finish yours and someone slides their plate in front of you because they couldn't finish theirs, and you find yourself unable to devour their desert because your body starts rejecting the sugar.

Nonetheless, One Barrel is one of my favorites for a single glass neat, or as a little added treasure in a cocktail.

One Barrel stands on it's own with a very unique flavor. Dood describes it perfectly, as do you M, a bottle of baked goodies.

At tasting events where many of the folks don't have a lot of rum experience, One Barrel consistently gets positive reactions with it's butterscotch candy and maple syrup nose. For me the finish is a bit rough and I wonder if someday we'll see an "old" version of like we do Goslings -- could be interesting.

And mine is soon on its way as well and Adam, watch out for the RR effect.

Last night's first taste was of Ron Abuelo 7 yr. It may be my first Panamanian rum! The nose and first sip give an impression of sweetness but the linger is smokey dry.

Through the efforts of Robert Burr I am getting to explore the superb Appleton 21. Very much the older bigger brother of the 12. But in this case subtlety was added to complexity. I'm a bit surprised to find that I'm becoming an Appleton fan!
