Default Plantation 5 year & Pyrat XO

I swung by the local Bevmo to check out their selection and I ended up walking out with a bottle of Pyrat XO reserve and a Grande Reserve Plantation 5 year. Haven't cracked either of them open yet, but I'm curious to your thoughts about each of these.

Pyrat rums are rubbish IMHO. Plantation on the other hand is good stuff.

Pyrat XO Reserve is an acquired taste see my review at

http://thefatrumpirate.wordpress.com...um-xo-reserve/

The Plantation Barbados is quite heavy on the vanilla. Its not the BEST Bajan rum but I've yet to have a bad one (bar Mount Gay Eclipse which is just soooo boring).

I enjoy both rums though I can understand why some HATE Pyrat so much.

I wouldn't say that Pyrat rums are rubbish, but from my limited experience of them, they are very sweet and remind me of "Cointreau".

The orange notes are so overwhelming, and it's so sweet, it hardly qualifies as true rum at all. Same is true of the Cask 23. Utter waste of money unless your tastes run that way.

I didn't care for the Pyrat too much. I will say I definitely enjoyed each glass but I do not think I will be purchasing it again. It is very citrusy to me. I enjoy hints of citrus but this did seem to be a little overwhelming. Perhaps the orange notes would make it decent in a summer cocktail? Though I tend not to make too many cocktails, I may experiment a bit with it.

The Plantation I can say I thoroughly enjoy. The 5 year is very good. Reminds me a bit of Appleton estate V/X if I'm thinking correctly? WHich I also enjoyed. I will definitely be purchasing more Plantation. Perhaps a different year next time.

I think the next purchase I make I am considering Mount Gay Extra Old and the Barbancourt 8 year, any thoughts on either of these?

Thanks for the replies!

I think Pyrat XO has changed a bit over the years. But please name me a RUM that hasn't. When I first started drinking Pyrat I liked it a lot. It led me to search out more rums. I just like RUM period and it's many different taste profiles. I still enjoy a glass of Pyrat now and then as I do many different brands.

Both Mount Gay Extra Old and Barbancourt 8 year old are excellent rums. You should enjoy both.

Yes, Berbician! I believe you are the one that suggested them to me in a previous post of mine. I believe I will pick those up next week!
