Default Havana Club Añejo Reserva vs 7 year old

Just picked up a bottle of each of these today, I am wondering what I can expect in taste differences? Which is your favorite between the two? The cost of them is not a factor as they are within $2 a bottle here.

I tried the 7 años some months ago and I have to say that it's not my first choice as a sipping rum. In this price category, I'd prefer Pampero Aniversario. The 7 años is great for mixing, yet a bit expensive for that purpose (around 20 euros here).

I have not tried the Reserva yet, but I keep a bottle of the 7 yr old on hand. I like it as a sipper. Theres a scene in the movie The Firm where Gene Hackman is sipping a Havana Club dark rum, not sure which one, at an outdoor cafe in the Caymans. He comments about how delicious it is. I know companies pay a lot for product placement in movies, but I doubt they payed for this since its not available in the USA.

I was disappointed in the Anejo. The 7 year is quite a good mixer, but I wouldn't drink it straight. Unsurprisingly, it makes a great cuba libre. Surprisingly, it makes a darn good Old Fashioned too.

For a Havana Club sipping rum, go with the Barrel Proof. Almost twice the price, it's true, but sublimely good.

It also looks like a limited vintages release/limited stock too. Time to call my local store.

This sums up my feelings exactly. I would buy the 7 again but the Anejo, for sure not. The good thing is as I said before...pricing is almost identical between the two rums here.

It really seems as if they had discontinued the Barrel Proof. Time to get one... but then again, I'd have to get one to drink and one to store away. Meh...
