Default Rum Tasting...in Canada

With our liquor laws and this is addressed particularly to B.C. forumites (all others chime in), I would like to hold a rum tasting at a private club that I belong to. Heck...I'm the Director of Education!
Currently, the rage is for single malt scotch. The scene is informal but about 20 - 25 folks show up. I figure, maybe six, 1/2 ounce samplers (numbered - not named) with some dialogue could make a good evening to encourage rum appreciation when labels are revealed.
So, what 6 rums should I choose?
Ideally 3 or 4 stellar Caribbean rums and a couple, off the wall...Indian, Phillipine???
Okay, its not a wine tasting, but are there equally acceptable (finger food?) things that could be served between tastings? Any suggestions?

And its a Yacht Club (very laid back)...a bunch of grizzly sailor guys & gals who supposedly know their rum. I doubt it! HELP
Cheers, Richard.

Use the 'round the world theme and play guess the rum and the country.

Khukri from Nepal is a rich, brown rum with a buttery caramel base.

Mount Gay XO, Cockspur 12, Doorly's XO and RL Seale 10 are robust aged rums from Barbados.

El Dorado 15 from Guyana is complex and intiguing.

Barbancourt 8 or 15 from Haiti, made from cane juice in the style of cognac.

Santa Teresa 1796 or Diplomatico Reserva Exclusive from Venezuela.

Zacapa 23 from Guatemala is a most drinkable rum.

Barcelo Imperial from Dominican Republic is earthy, smoky and complex.

Centenario Fundacion XX Anos from Costa Rica is sweet and smooth.

Don Q Anejo or Barrilito 3 Star from Puerto Rico are light, mature and smooth.

Angostura 1824 from Trinidad has a unique profile, rich and complex.

Appleton Extra Estate Rum or Master Blender's Legacy are exceptional examples of Jamaican full flavored rums.

Clément VSOP from Martinique (or Cuvee Homere, an exquisite blend of 3 vintage years: 1991, 1996, 1999)

Gosling's Black Seal or Old Rum are fine examples of the Bermuda style rich, dark rums

Abuelo 7 Anos is a fine blend of Panamanian rums

Cruzan Single Barrel is a notable rum from the US Virgin Islands

Flor de Caña 18 is the pride of Nicaragua

Prichard's Fine Rum from Tennessee will surprise your guests with its echoes of fine whiskey

That should get you started. If you can't taste all these at once, bring your friends back another time or two and keep them guessing.

Serve a rich, slow roasted pulled pork with BBQ sauce with sweet jalepeno cornbread and tangy coleslaw to stand up to these killer rums

Thumbs up

Many thanks, Rob...an excellent idea and suggested choices. And JMac, having already stirred up interest, I'll probably schedule in late summer and/or early Fall. There is also an outside chance of luring "our leader", Ed, up to these northern waters and have him participate. In that case, at a date convenient to him. Cheers, Richard.

Sounds good....keep me informed please; I'll be there with goodie bag in hand.

If Ed comes up, I'll procure a bottle of Smuggler's Cove for him.

Sounds like my kinda crowd, being a slightly grizzled sailor myself! What YC are you with? Are you interested in guests from other clubs for the tasting? We would be happy to bring some bottles along!

Any chance to get the BC boys/gals together for some sipping and chatting I'am down with that. I second the motion that it would be great to have Ed show up for one of the gatherings!! :-)

Cheers to empty glasses

Default Stonehouse Pub

A good friend of mine from the Bahamas who is basically responsible for getting me into rum has opened a new pub in Victoria called the Stonehouse. Click on the link below to see the new Facebook page. Can't wait to visit some time in the future. It would be a great place for a rum tasting as Kevin the manager loves his rum like the rest of us!!
