Default Question

Sommeliers are to wine as Maоtre Fromager are to cheese. What is the term for rum enthusiasts, or is the term “rum enthusiast”. Shall we create a term?

Thoughts.

Ahm...A sommelier is a professional whereas an oenophile is an educated layman. The participants on this site are by and large enthusiasts and journalists or bloggers with a scattering of distillers and bartenders. I think the only people I would consider to be the equivalent of sommeliers are the few rum bar owners and the one or two people who lead rum seminars (Ed, Robert, &c.).

Even so, the term sommeliers is applied with modifiers to experts in water (water sommeliers), whisky (whisky sommeliers), tobacco (tobacco or cigar sommeliers), &c., so I don't see why, if necessary, you wouldn't have a rum sommelier. With that said, it seems a bit unnecessary to me to have rum sommeliers. It seems a tad snobbish, and one of the things I love about rum is that it is not a particularly snobbish spirit. (Of course, if you were most commonly drunk either as a strawberry daquiri or mixed with coke, you wouldn't be that hung up on status either.)

Cheers. - S

Rumelier perhaps, or how about Canelier?

Does disciple of the noble spirit ring a chime?

I often write my profession as professional rum drinker on immigration forms which more often than not launches the officer into a discussion of his favorite tot.

I like that Ed. I might suggest "Companero/a del Ron" I know my keyboard is missing that little squiggly over the "n". It is a Spanish term that does not translate into one word in English. It brings together those across a wide diaspora. Professionals, Amateurs, Dilettantes in a most appealing way in my opinion
