I'm relatively new to good rum. My progression went something like Bacardi 8 - Cruzan Single Barrel - Appleton VX - Pampero - Zacapa - Zacapa - Zacapa - Zacapa...
I thought that the Barbencourt five star was Ok, Pyrat XO was good, Pamperio Aniversario was very good and the Ron Zacapa 23 was outstanding. The last bottle I purchased was Foursquare, which was Ok on the rocks but not what I would call smooth neat. Next on my list (in no particular order) is the El Dorado 15, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and Santa Teresa orange.

Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of rums to be discovered. Some you'll probably more than others. But don't be surprised if your tastes change as you enjoy more different rums.

Is Zacapa available in Florida by some strange chance??? I see that name get tossed around here a lot and need to make a go of it.

You'll enjoy the ED15, strong rum taste with delicious banana. Sound like you're on a standard path that many here have followed. Keep it up from one zacapa lover to the next.

Mikeal, welcome to the for-rum! Nice little progression you got going there....
And Young i would be flabbergasted if you can't find Zacapa on Base... it is distibuted by Diageo (Jose Cuervo, Capt Morgan-- those people...)

Young, you must try Zacapa. I wouldn't be such a fan of rum if it wasn't for Zacapa. It opened my eyes to how good rum could be neat and, in fact, how good other alcohols could be neat, on the rocks, or in a proper cocktail once you find the right ones for you. I am not saying that Zacapa is the best rum out there, but out of the 40 or so rums I have tasted, it still stands at the top for me. I brought a bottle to Thanksgiving yesterday and it is about 80% gone now. I think I opened some more eyes to what a wonderful spirit rum can be.
