I stopped into the Liquor store today, and of course forgot my notes (and I have a bad memory). The two bottles I was going back and forth between were the Mount Gay Extra Old and the Angostura 1824. I ended up with the Mt. Gay because I seemed to recall it got favorable reviews...
I have had so few still; I tend to compare them to my favorite which remains the Zacapa. I find this Mt. Gay a little softer in the nose, a little lighter in the flavor, maybe not as rich. It has a little more bite in the finish. But I do enjoy this pour and am not disappointed; I don't want to drink the same thing every night!

I did pick up some Cruzan Raspberry to make my wife a Raspberry Pomegranate Mojito tonight as well.

Mount Gay XO! I find myself pouring this for myself and friends more than many other rums. We have it here in our Vons/Safeway supermarkets! The Angostura 1824 is a horse of a different color. It makes a very, very bold statement. I confess to hoarding it for myself to drink.

"hoarding" it!!! Well that’s a pretty good recommendation. I'm going to get in trouble but maybe I need to stop in again tomorrow and try another?

I got the approx recipe from the Palisades bartender in Seattle

2 oz of Cruzan Raspberry Rum
1 oz of Simple Syrup
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz pomegranate juice
4 mint leaves
I shook over ice and poured into the glass we use which I topped with 2 oz of Soda water.

My wife is happy!

Be sure to sample others from Trinidad to be sure you like the distinctive profile which many describe as vanilla-laden before laying down $$$ for the top of the line. The 1824 really does perfect the balancing act, though.

T47, good pick in the MG XO. I find it classy, unchanged, no excuses, just a great quality sipping rum, and the price for product is very reasonable IMHO.

Young, in a prior life I use to make a good pomegranate martini. Recipe...
1 part stoli cranberri, 1 part stoli raspberri, 1 part pomegranate juice, 1 part pama pomegranate liquor, shake with ice, strain, garnish with pomegranate seeds. You could switch out the vodka for rum and play around with it, heck depending on how strong the misses likes it you're better off making it to her liking anyway. Hope this helps you out.
