New England - that's in the US

Where it all began in the colonies, rum is again becoming the spirit of choice. Have you seen anything on the shelves that shouldn't be missed by others.

The WineChateau deal is on Ron Zacapa Rum Centenario not XO

Thanks Silverfish - however you may not have noticed that SV is selling the Zacapa XO (a step above the Zacapa 23 anos) at a great price.

If you like the Z23, you really should try the ZXO!

Apologies for my hasty post. If the XO is "better" than
the 23 and both are priced the same, that makes it an
even better deal and one I may have to consider!

As Ferris said..."If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

I am in the process of reviewing the XO, and can attest to its superior nature. I would have been disappointed if the XO was merely a slightly more mature spirit than the 23. This is not the case; what I have been appreciating about the XO is how substantially different it is from the 23. I cannot say yet which is better, as further tastings will determine that, but it is a substantially different product, sweeter, more suave and decadent.

If a silky suave rum full of character and bursting with sweet flavour is for you, I suspect you will like the XO very very much. If you want something a little less sweet with a more complex oak tinge, then you may like the 23.

I am going to enjoy myself as I taste a this few more times and firm up my review.

Alright, you talked me into it. I was at SV website picking
up some Evan Williams Single Barrel (2000 - Malt Advocate
Rating: 95pts) and remembered this thread so I added an
XO to my order. Only downside is the flex shipping I chose
won't have it to me before mid-Feb. Based on what I've
read here, I'm very much looking forward to it, though.

Arctic Wolf, do consider at least one mixing in your favorite rum cocktail.

Based on the discussion about long open bottles, I decided to work on a bottle of ZXO which I had opened in April. Because I have gotten more of it at the very reasonable SV price, I decided to do a little mixing with it - which I would not normally do with a $112 bottle of rum. I've done some Mai Tais which were superb with the ZXO. The sweetness of the rum is partially offset by a health dose of lime. I've even tried omitting the 1/4 oz. rock candy syrup to balance out the sweetness inherent in the XO, which was especially good.

So one of the great things about the expanded distribution and newly lower price of this exceptional rum is that I now include it in my mixing rotation. Thank you SV!

Hi JJ

I always mix every rum I try. If I am reviewing a rum, I will start with an ounce in a glencairn glass. I will drink this neat and write up tasting notes and observations. About halfway down I may add ice and test the effect.

Then I will start again with about 1/2 ounce and slowly adding coke and tasting it at various ratios. Again I write down what I think.

The next session I go through a similar process first with an ounce of the spirit neat. This time I may try a small daiquiri with the second half ounce.

After five sessions (or more) I will write my review. I try to suggest a cocktail, even for high priced spirits. I do not believe that any spirit should be confined to drinking neat or on ice. Even the most sublime of spirits may be enjoyed in a quality cocktail.

For the XO I have indeed found a cocktail which on occasion I prefer to the straight spirit.

The Royal Batiste

1 1/2 oz Zacapa Centenario XO
1/2 oz Louis Alexandre Grand Marinier

Build in a cocktail Glass on one Large Ice Cube

On occasion, the combination of the high quality slightly dry Grand Marnier, is exquisite with the sweeter Zacapa XO.

PS. My review will be ready next week.

Seth,

Thanks for these prices. I picked up two bottles (having never tried Zacapa XO before) and a 15yr Eldorado. I will most certainly be using your store to flesh out and expand by collection .

But when to open the XO and have my first sip?

There is never a better time than the present to tast a new rum.
