The Wild West

It's a big place but there's rum in those mountains. Here's where to look for it.

Default Appleton Extra $24 in WA

For some reason, it's a "closeout" in the Evergreen state at the moment. Search for it and find which stores have it here: http://www.liq.wa.gov/LCBhomenet/Sto...andSearch.aspx

(The Queen Anne store in Seattle had several bottles earlier this week.)

I was not yet a member of the forum last year, but I do remember taking advantage of this deal at the time and buying a bottle. However, when the Appleton Reserve was on sale for that same price, I bought 3 or 4 bottles!

Sadly, almost everything in WA state is significantly higher now that the liquor trade has been privatized, but with the large number of WA folks driving to Oregon (or ordering online) for lower prices, we may see a return to the state-run system. You can bet I'll be keeping an eye out for the Appleton again if/when that happens!

It's not privitization that caused the high prices -- it's the outrageous liquor taxes in Washington.
  • 21% sales tax
  • $3.77-per-liter excise tax
  • 10% levy on liquor distributors
  • 17% levy on liquor retailers

The discussion of why liquor prices are higher in Washington could fill this forum. The simplest answer is that Costco and their attorneys sold out the people of Washington so that Costco and a few other large retailers could profit. One of the fees or taxes that is included in the deal is a stipulation that distributors accept responsibility for $150 million in revenue that was previously collected by the state. For any small distributor to sign up for that costs money.

I was in Washington state the night the curtain was removed on prices. To say the public was falling over in the aisles is an overstatement but no one was buying as much liquor as they thought they were going to.

When I dream up a better job, I'm going to take it. In the meantime, the research continues.
