Default Rum Coruba - known in your country?

Hi folks,

I want to know, if RUM CORUBA, distilled in Jamaica, is known in your country.
Here in Switzerland, especially in Basel where I come from, it is the most known Rum. Every Kid knows the caribbean guy with the hat on the neck of the Coruba Bottles.

Coruba Rum and the city of Basel have a long "partnership" together. In the early 1940's a business man from Basel called Rudolf Waeckerlin, who was selling insecticide, went for business to Jamaica. He came back with island Rum and was totally excited from it. After that, he went again to Jamaica and started Rum Coruba, which means: Compagnie Rhumière Bale (Bale=Basel in french language)

There is still the old "headquarter" of Coruba in Basel, even the family Waeckerlin has sold the business 20 years ago.

So, this was the funny story about Rum Coruba, which started in freezy cold Switzerland before it went to Jamaica!

Now I'm excited about every comments :-)

cheers from Basel, Lélé

From what I know of Coruba, aside from my own tasting notes, it is made in Jamaica but not really a big deal there: it is a huge hit in New Zealand, though, and perhaps the islands' best selling rum, however vile some people think it is.

It's definitely known in Canada, which is where I bought mine. I can't, on the other hand, speak for its popularity, as all my drinking buddies bar one are into whiskies.

I brought back Coruba amber from Jamaica - good for cocktails but otherwise nothing remarkable about it. Coruba is served at many resorts on the island - I guess the price-point is a little lower than other rums - it was one of the cheapest at the DF store in Sangster Airport.

Interesting. Didn't know about the Swiss connection.
