Default Berry Bros Demerara Rum

A colleague of mine dropped off thsi bottle to me 2 weeks back and I know very little of it, I was wondering if it was a private label. The label says:

Berrys' Own Selection
Reserve Demerara Rum 1975
Bottled in the UK for Berry Bros & Rudd

I went to the Berry Bros website, it lists this as a rare expensive rum.

Tasting this, it doesnt remind me of a demerara rum with the exception of its dry, long finish. I taste a lot of the esters in it reminiscent of a fine Jamaican rum. Its very complex which I like, however it has a real spicy mid-palate that I dont like. Does anybody know more about this rum? It was obviously distilled and aged in 1975, but when was it pulled? Is this in fact a 31-33 year old rum?

I don't know anything about that particular year but here's a couple of Berry Bros 1992 Demerara reviews that you might find interesting. I hope the 1975 is better...

I've never heard the term "esters" Can you help a forum member with way to many dead brain cells.

As far as I can remember, an ester is what you get when you react an alcohol with a carboxylic acid. However, I've no idea what they taste like - my school didn't allow that sort of experimentation.

When air reacts with a spirit it oxidises the alcohol and turns into aldehydes > acids > esters. Esters give the spirit its fruityness.
