Default What "snack" goes with rum?

A friend and I are going to taste a few rums this week - and I was wondering, if there was some sort of "snack" that goes well with rum, that we could enjoy while trying to sound clever to each other?

Neither of us smokes cigars, so I was thinking in the lines of chocolate, but I fear it will disturb the taste of the different rums - and salty snacks I presume are all wrong? Cake? Candy? Vegetables? Fruits? Anything?

Anyone have a good suggestion?

(Not that the rum doesn't go nicely alone, hee hee)

Salty is ok with me, I like roasted peanuts and cashews while I sip my rum.

I tried plantains when I was visiting indians outside Manaus a few years ago (in a dish with piranhas and chive), but it is a fruit/vegetable that is not commonly available here in Denmark - maybe one of the smaller speciality-stores will have it. It looks very interesting.

Thank you for the tip. If I can't find the plantains, I will try regular bananas. It'll probably be a mess in the pan though

Cheese! See Rumdood's entry on the subject.

Tortillas con frijoles y queso are good, too.

I agree, chocolate is great with a good rum. Ron Diplomatico usually have chocolate to sample along with their rums at rum festivals and usually a few pretty girls to serve it. Always one of my favourite stands!!!

Here in sweden we have a chocolate bar named "Bounty" Its a light chocolate that is surrounding like a moist, sweet coconut filling! This is exellent with a good sipping rhum! I just wish the candy was dark chocolate!

Other than that, mosts chocolate dessert is nice with rhum i Think! I have tried rhum together with a sallty blue cheese like Stilton, but that was not that good! (Cognac is exellent with Stilton though!)

I can imagine that dark chocolate with nuts will go perfectly to a good sipping rhum, but normally i just go with plain dark chocolate! But as with the rhum. The chocolate must be top quality!
