Default Sugar free recipes

I don't know if this is possible for rum drinks; does anyone (Tiare perhaps) have recipes for sugarless rum drinks or ones with minimal sugar? I am also looking for some recipes that would go great with rhum agricole.

Well...me...and sugar...i LOVE dark sugar... so for sugarfree recipes i´m the wrong person...sorry...

The thing is...that the sour needs to be balanced with sweet. So maybe fresh juice from sweet tasting fruits?

Or if you mix with diet coke or diet sprite or something?

As for Agricole, Ti Punch is King! but you can make different rum punches as well, like if you mix rum agricole with fresh juices.

Or try a white agricole with some fresh lime Juice, liquid Honey (instead of syrup), Angostura Bitters.

I`m sure Hank also can help out here, he is the Ambassador of Rum agricole i think..

Try using something like Cointreu, or another sweet liqueur. If I recall correctly, technically, liqueur has no sugar while cordials do? Anyway, there's a ton of very sweet sugar free booze out there that tastes quite sweet. You can also use fructose-based syrups (e.g. very fresh honey), in about an eighth the quantities you use sucrose based syrups (anything with table sugar), since super fresh fructose is approximately eight times sweeter than sucrose for a given mass of sugar. You can also start with sweeter rums as your base.
Cheers. - S

thanks...my desire for sugar free rum drinks is only temporary. I might need my knee scoped which cuts into the gym time which supports my sweet tooth!

I think the idea of using liqueurs is good , you can read about both liqueurs and cordials here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liqueur
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordial_%28medicine%29

Also as the scribe said using a sweeter rum maybe would be good?

I can't think of a way to make a Ti Punch without sugar cane syrup or with out sugar in general. I am sure the mixologists on our forum could help you with cocktails that use less sugar.
I think the Ti Punch may be a little easier calorie wise, since the rums are not as sweet, and you can use small amounts of syrup.
Tiare's idea of using fruit juices that are already sweet might be a good idea.
I always go for the classic cocktail, and I dont concern myself with calories, hence the extra 12-15 pounds on my waistline.
The Clement website has some great agricole cocktails, and I am sure Ed, who is the real agricole expert, or Robert, could add some info here.

Maybe you could try this recipe suggestion for a drink with agricole blanc. Its basically a modified sling..

1-2 p rum agricole blanc
1/2p lychee liqueur
1p lychee puree (buy lychee fruits and just mash them)
1p fresh lemon juice
1/2p simple syrup....
Top with some Club soda

Shake, strain and serve in a tall glass and garnsih with a lychee fruit.

there are numerous sugar free beverages, including lemonades, fruity flavored soft drinks, etc that could be used with rum. You could add Splenda to lime juice for a non-traditional ti punch, daiquiri or caipirinha.

I've actually tried this with not-so-bad results. I mean, it's not perfect, but when you're going for lower sugar/calorie content, it will do the job.

You could potentially try a Xylitol product to use as a sweetener. It is also an acceptable product for diabetics as xylitol controls the insulin spike.

I use Xylitol as my only sweetener at home, and also can bake with it/cook with it in the same ratios/portions as sugar.

If you are watching calorie intake, are diabetic (actually, if you are diabetic, you probably are already familiar with xylitol), or want to minimize that insulin rush that sends calories packing away into fat cells, this might be worth trying. I've not used it to create syrups for alcohol drinks as of yet, but I suppose there could be some promise. At least try?
