Default Trader Vic's Rum

Has anyone tried any of the company's rums (light, amber, dark)? They sell them at a liquor store in the area, and I wondered if they were worth trying in a mai tai.

They aren't terribly expensive, but I'm not sure of TV's quality lately. Their new version of passion fruit syrup is pretty disgusting.

Trader Vic rums are available here in South Florida at Walgreens Liquor stores exclusively, as far as I can tell. Their Kona Coffee rum liquor and their Macadamia Nut rum liquor are excellent. I've heard some people say their spiced rum is good, but I've never tried it. It would be interesting to know where they come from. My guess is Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico.

On a "loosely related" sidenote to that, I've heard that Walgreen's is getting out of liquor departments in their stores. In their aggressive build mode and remodel mode, when they are putting up new stores, they are not putting in liquor departments; when they are remodeling stores, they are removing liquor departments and not putting them back in.

As a stockholder, that concerns me, as I'd think having a liquor department would be a decent revenue stream and profit center.

I asked in a letter to WG why they were not moving forward with liquor departments and I was blandly told "It's a management decision."

As a shareholder, I'd think I'd be entitled to a better more in-depth answer than this, but perhaps not?

Anyway, that's what I see in Illinois - not sure as to what they are doing with their liquor marts in other states; over the years I've enjoyed buying my alcohol at Walgreens. They have had a decent selection and a competitive price, and their locations are generally convenient.

What is this liquor in Walgreens that you speak of???

Back east here we have to go across the boarder to the state run monopoly liquor stores, or here in Massachsetts, to a 'package' store... no such convenience of picking up liquor whilst shopping for other things.... hmmm:eek:

ha!

That's what we get for living the "mommy state." If only there were other parts of this country with good higher education...

As an aside to KrustyKrab, I was sailing the North Shore last week, both in Marblehead and (if you consider it North Shore) Winchester.

Cheers. - S

Primate
Here in Arizona, they are doing the same thing. Our local Walgreens redesigned and the liquor department disappeared.

I just don't get it... and being a shareholder, I really, truly would like to know why they are taking them out!!!

CVS Pharmacy is moving into town, generally going into pre-existing stores that were formerly OSCO Drug Stores or something else. I've noticed if the store they moved into, and that store had a liquor department, they've kept them (hooray)!!! I'll have to check a new store though sometime, I'll bet they don't have liquor departments.

P.S. And I'm sorry - I feel like have derailed this thread from the original topic, so let's get back to it...

I'm seeing the Trader Vic's pop up on more and more shelves. THe price is certainly "low end" but I also wonder how good it might actually be. Whaler's products are budget priced for the most part, but I think their quality is pretty good.

The Macadamia Nut Rum Liquer sounds really interesting. Robert, how would you serve that? Alone as an after-dinner drink, or would you mix that with something?

I Illinois, liquor is just so widely available and in so many places (for you folks out East)... you'd see pocket bottles behind the register right next to the cigarettes in any given gas station.

It stands alone well as a sipper, but it would be interesting to experiment with it in some cocktails.

In South Florida, the Walgreens liquor stores that were not doing well have disappeared, but those that continue to have increased sales year to year are still here. From my experience, when you have a long term liquor store employee that has connected with the clients in the neighborhood, the store stays open and thrives.

New, large operations like Total Wine and Liquors will certainly have an impact on smaller stores in some areas, but many people are creatures of habit and will stay with the brand they know and the store they know unless something drastic changes.
