Indian firm to remodel factory in Guyana to sugar packaging facility
Along with the information on the Enmore sugar factory remodel in this article, there is mention of steps being taken to protect the place name Demerara, as well as the modernisation of the Skeldon sugar factory.
Thanks Rum Runner for the interesting read with respect to the modernisation of the Enmore facility. The effort to oppose the counterfeiting of Demerara sugar by firms outside Guyana is also noteworthy, including the legal action against the firm from Mauritius.
There have been a few "problems" recently with the Skeldon project, although you won't read about them in the Guyana Chronicle as this is a pro-government paper. For a more balanced view, take a look at the Stabroek News,
A few days ago, a Guyanese sugar transporting boat was seized by the Surinamese navy in the Corentyne River, right next to the Skeldon wharf. Surinam insists that the whole of the Corentyne River is its territory and is trying to bully Guyana into submission. There is a very good editorial on this in Sunday's (26th October 2008) Stabroek News.
