Default The Price of Rum

Being new to the Rum world I am amazed at the incredible options out there for $20-$40. It amazes me that people pay upwards of $30+ for premium Vodka. This has to be one of the biggest scams going...Spending alot of money on a spirit that is neutral. Rum on the other hand is delicious. let everyone spend hundreds of dollars on single malt scotch...I am content spending very little in comparison for a tasty spirit like Rum. I just hope Rum doesn't turn into a fad like so many others as the price would surely go up.

Rum will catch up soon, I'm very afraid.

Enjoy now!

I'm always amazed as well. I would NEVER spend $30 on a bottle of neutral spirit when I can spend about half of that on a good bottle of white rum which has been distilled to taste like vodka. As a friend told me a few years ago, "People drink over-priced vodka because that's what they think they should be drinking."

I'm just glad everyone doesn't think they should be drinking rum, but as long as a few companies continue to sell massive amounts of cheap rum, the reputation will take a while to improve. I see rum as the most under-rated spirit behind the bar. But don't tell everyone.

All these articles about rums popularity increasing is certainly not helping.

Rum is, I think, like any other commodity. It responds to supply and demand, and these days the new wild card, the price of energy. Certainly, in comparison to whisky, what we have here is a bargain.

As rum's popularity increases though, the prices are sure to do likewise. I have always thought rum was the most delicious spirit; I just never drank as much/many different varieties of it as I do now.

I agree with Matusalem. I fear prices have no place to go but up. Time will tell.

As rum goes up, other things will come down. Brandy, for example, seems like it has had its day in the sun, and seems to me to be coming down. As long as rum takes its time heading up, at roughly the same rate that I am transitioning from poor student to productive member of society, I'm not too worried.
Cheers. - S

I agree totally with you, because I see that many people who are not experts neither connoisseurs of Rum, tell me:
"I don't like Rum" on the base that they have tried only the few great companies you mentioned, as HC, Pampero, Bacardi etc.
They haven't ever taste better Rum.
I think the responsibility is of both the market and this companies: in almost all the Mall shelves we can only find these brands, so it's impossible to develop quality and genuine Rums.

People, on the contrary, tell me: I like very much Single Malt Whisky.
It's obvious, because your knowledge of them is helped by the same shelves, which contain many great Single Malt!
Imagine if you have Jack Daniel's as the only whisky available...You can't like whisky!

These are actually lies, and also unfair. Jack is perfectly sippable, at least with a cube, and is even aged. Also, the fact that you categorized Pampero with Bacardi is, to me, likewise unfair. Are there better whisk(e)ys, even American ones, than Jack Daniels? Certainly. Are there better rums than Pampero, I would presume so. That said, I think if one drank Pampero or Jack Daniels, one would be happy with them, especially if one didn't have the hundreds of dollars commanded by even a good bottle of whisky.
Cheers. - S

I don`t know which JD he meant and Pampero anniversario is in my opinion a very good rum, but the point, that if you have only tried a few of maybe not the best (like Bacardi) rums, its maybe hard to get to like rum..but i believe that rum is on its way..
