Special gold is the bottom of the Appletons line. This isn't meant to insult the product, it's still a perfectly acceptable mixing rum.

The VX is better, but still best suited to mixing rather than sipping. In fact, if I had only one choice for an amber mixer rum in my bar it would be VX. For the price, it's a really excellent value.

Once you get to the Reserve (it's kind of the transition), then the Extra 12, then the Master Blend, you are starting to hit sipping rums. Best with an ice cube.

I find them to be strongly flavoured but not medicinal, rich without being sweet, and I can always identify the line by an undercurrent of orange.

Spend the extra dollars and get the 21 year Appleton. Such a good flavor.

I dont think I have ever seen the 'special gold'. However I have tried both the Reserve and the V/X on many occassions and like them both.

I would say either are great mixers, and the Reserve (at least for me) goes well with coconut water for a semi-sipper.

VX is a great mixer for its price (usually around $17 here in Oregon). The Gold is meh, so it's worth it to spend a few more bucks for VX.

I have not tried the special gold, but I have had a chance to sample the V/X, Reserve, and the 12 year varities. Personally I perfered the Reserve I felt it had balanced sweetness, compared to the twelve year. For a general mixer you can't go wrong with the v/x.
