Default Depaz? Whats similar?

Just read a great article of Rum Agricole in a magazine called Drinks. It references a guy named Ed Hamilton (is that you Ed?). I really enjoy Depaz, what other Rum Agricole is similar?

They found me again. I've written for Drinks and have talked to a number of people about rhum agricole for more magazines than I can count and some of the articles have actually been published.

As for what is similar to Depaz Blue Cane Amber Rum, La Favorite Ambre is the closest you'll find to Depaz though Neisson Eleve Sous Bois has more nutty wood flavor than either of the other two. Depaz is diluted to 90 proof for the US market, the amber rhum agricole from Depaz is bottled at 100 proof on Martinique. Both La Favorite and Neisson amber rhums are bottled at 100 proof under the US and French labels and the rhums are identical for both markets, the labels had to have the word RUM added to satisfy the TTB in the freest country in the world.

In the US, Depaz is imported by a company called Kobrand and they don't import any white rhum agricole to the US. What you have in Sweden at 100 proof is the same as what is sold on Martinique.

Spent the last few evenings with a bottle of Depaz. I really enjoy it.

I obviously need to explore deeper into this whole rhum agricole scene...

Dood, apart from the obvious wonderful Ti punch and Punch vieux, try scooping out a Pineapple, muddle some of the fruit in a mixing glass, add the juice of 2 limes, 2 tblsp honey-mix, 5 ml orgeat, 25ml 100 proof agricole blanc, 25 ml aged agricole and shake with ice very quickly. Fill the pineapple with crushed ice, strain and pour. Add Ting.

The problem with honey mix is the milk solids that forms when the mix gets chilled. Make the honey mix with one part butter (if possible use clarified butter) and equal part sugar that you heat and mix together and then add some JW&N overproof rum.
You want a smooth creamy sauce.
Keep just above room temp when adding to the mixing glass. I sometimes shake and ignore the milk solids..when drunk from a pineapple you don`t see them..but the drink is fabulous!

Or use this honey mix (1:1 honey and water, heat but do not boil, then cool it and bottle it; will keep 2 weeks in fridge)

I've been away for awhile but I saw this thread on Depaz. I've now since tried and at first, I hated it.

It really does have a tequila nose and pallette. However when used in a ti punch with the proper ingredients its wonderful.....sadly the bottle is all gone.

This rum really doesn't do well with other mixers IMO.

JMac, i must admit that the agricole i use for this concoction above is Dillon blanc and/or Clйment vieux..and not Depaz, and my Depaz is unfortunately finished. But this drink really is yummy, you should give it a try!

I went yesterday and bought a pineapple just for this drink, but when i came to the shop to buy Ting it was finished..at first the guy didn`t know what i meant when i said Ting, so today i went back with a empty can to show. Then he said, oh you meant THAT one! oh yes, its really really good isn`t it? its finished because i drank up most of it...

So tomorrow i will have to sub the Ting with Sanpellegrino pompelmo.

I should clarify my last post; it was hastily written.

I'm currently on holidays in the US and obtained a bottle of Depaz Blue cane rum.

When I first opened it, it really does have a nose similar to tequila. I found the palette did as well. When I tried it with Coke, pre-made mojito mix, etc I found I really didn't like the taste of the Depaz in those mixers. I some what surprised myself as I had made up my mind that I would automatically like this rum.

When I finally made a ti punch with Depaz it was great. I got the impression that this rum was only specifically made to be a in a ti punch. Weird I know....

Sadly the bottle is gone; another surprise was how much the brother in law liked ti punches.....
