Default Bottom shelf

Where does the bulk of bottome shelf come from (country)? Who makes most of it? Are their any decent bottom shelf rums?

Interesting question! I often wonder this myself. Like the jumbo plastic jug of McCormick's and the stuff in WalMart (where the rum looks like the vodka which looks like the gin) all same bottles, slightly different labels.

some of the least expensive rum we have here comes from one or more distilleries in Florida (no import tax). There is cheap rum from many countries here.

OK then... a new spin for this thread (hopefully not meaning to derail it).

What real "cheapie" rum have we been bold enough to say "OK, I'll try." And then you were pleasantly surprised?

I don't know how much less than $8.99 a bottle I need to spend to be able to say "yeah, I can afford that" so I'll throw a hat in the ring with Plantation Barbados, which you can still buy at Hi Time for 9 bucks. I really enjoy it....neat is no problem.

Most bottom shelf American rums are products of the U.S.V.I. In our well is Ron Rio, youve also got Ronrico, I think Bankers, Admiral Nelson, and a lot of other USVI rums.

I thought that Ronrico was Serralles' low end brand from Puerto Rico.

I am spoiled by $9.95 Doorlys 5 year old rum. Also, $10.95 El Dorado 5 year old. You can't beat these two great mixing rums at this price. We buy Barbancourt white rum for $5 a bottle in Turks and Caicos Islands.

I've been impressed with Don Q and Flor de Caсa Limon flavored rums for making tropical drinks, both are in the $13 range here.

I've been meaning to try the Doorly's white at $10.95. Has anyone tried it?

I tried a bottle of Doorly's white and did not like it...picked it up at Total Wine for 9.99 figuered what the heck...tasted like a cheap vodka to me. I guess I expected more considering the other Doorly products are pretty good.

As for cheap rum that I have said "wow this is not that bad" to. I would have to say the gold and white Palo Viejo from Puerto Rico...they run about $7 a bottle around my neck of the woods. The white has a "chardonay" color to it similiar to Cruzan light and is rather smooth. The gold has a nice hint of orange to it (on the style of Pyrat XO, but not nearly as sweet and syrupy).
