Default Appleton Reserve vs. Appleton 12

Our Total Wine used to carry the Appleton 12 which quickly became one of my go-to rums. I've noticed lately that the 12 has been replaced by the Reserve (at least at the TW's here). Can anyone tell me what their thoughts are on the Reserve? I see there is no age statement, just that it is a blend of 20 of the Esate's rums.

Thanks...

The Total Wine establishments here are still carrying the 12 yr. old, so hopefully you'll be re-stocked soon. The Reserve is overpriced IMHO, but I think Chip's review is a good point of reference for this Rum.

I feel the opposite from Seldom, that the Reserve is a better value than the 12. The 12 has more age, and accordingly more concentrated flavor, but I think the Reserve beats it by a hair in balance.

Try both.

I actually enjoy the Reserve! I find it's fine as a sipper, especially with ice, although I have yet to try the 12 year so I can't compare them. However, I will say that the Reserve is by far my favorite rum for mixing with cola.

I'm actually torn between buying another bottle of the Reserve or the Extra once I finish my current bottle of Reserve.

Reserve is really good. The 12 year is a bit more oaky, but still a decent sipper.

12 is one of my favorite rums in general and beats most other rums hollow for it's price point. Reserve I find is a bit too harsh, though it is better than v/x. The problem is the price difference between them. For my area 12 is only $4 more than Reserve, and v/x is $9 less. So in my cabinet I stock v/x for mixing and 12 y.o. for mixing and sipping, and leave Reserve on the shelf.

Exactly my point. There are just too many Rums at the Reserves' price point that are far superior IMHO. The Reserve doesn't even enter into the equation. It's the 12 yr. old or somebody elses entirely. But it apparently has its fans regardless.

As I just posted in another thread, I've only recently purchased the Extra. It's not my favorite but boy, is it good and unlike all the others I've tried... I think I could easily identify it blind on the first whiff. Can the more experienced rum-rats here please tell me what these delightful aromas are? I'm picking up a whole whack of tropical fruit (its perhaps the most fruity rum I've had) if that's indeed what I'm smelling.

I may be wrong but I think the Reserve was developed by Joy Spence and the 12 was already in production when she took over. The reserve is the RUM I started with on my RUM journey, so I'm partial to it as a sipper. I use the 12 or VX when mixing.

The reserve is ok but the 12 is amazing. I don't think you can compare the two honestly...
