Maybe this rancid smell and taste was caused by the formation of butyric acid during the fermentation process, and the unpleasant aroma can transfer over during distillation. Butyric acid can give a distillate notes of rancid butter, vomit, etc. I recently sampled a spirit with a very strong lactic acid presence that had the smell and taste of bad baby formula....not a smell that is easy to forget!

Anyway, I digress.....but it does sound like an issue that is coming from the fermentation process.
