look for a rum tasting map or flavour profile chart. heres a few examples of what i mean:

i also have a great book on whisky that breaks down all the common flavour profiles. it even tells u where the flavours come from. ie american oak adds vanilla flavour to a whisky (which you will find in most bourbons).
even a list of common flavours would be a start. i have been looking everywhere for a good tasting ''guide'' but have had no luck.
