Was wondering if anyone has tried this rum. It is pretty cheap but is marketed as one of the best sipping rums as voted by CNBC or some other morning show. Just wonder if it is worth trying it.

I haven't seen Cohete for a few years and am surprised it's still on the market. Cheap is relative but generally if you see something discounted 50% it means the importer or distributor is changing. My advice is that if you like something and it's being discounted, buy a case or so because it isn't going to last.

Best sipping rum? That must be a blend I haven't tasted.

I was just going to ask about this rum, but thought to see if a thread had been started on it first.

I went to the Friar Tuck's in Bloomington, IL today (better selection than the one near me). They had some interesting rums on the shelf, including Scarlet Ibis Rum, All the Murray McDavid's, all the Plantation Rums and they had both the Cohete Silver (smooth) and Gold both advertised as "with Guarana".

Both for $11.99 a bottle. I know for a fact this stock wasn't in this store 4 months ago, so either it is new, and there is distribution to it, or it was pulled from another store or another retailer?

Anyway - worth the $12? The Scarlet Ibis was tempting, but $32 a bottle...

Oh, they had Westerhall too, but gone are the nice waxed on caps. Plain cap with green foil wrapper now.

I've had the gold, but it was a couple of years ago. I think it has been discontinued in my area. The gold was a little rough. They might have some ages rum that I never tried, but "best sipping rum"...that would be a personal opinion. I would give it a try if it was in the $12 range.

I found the gold to be rather smooth and actually enjoyed it as a sipper. Have not tried the white yet, but plan on picking up a bottle.

The Scarlet Ibis I found to be very good. i picked upa bottle after chatting with Forest on visit to rum mecca last year in SoCal (planning on heading back out in July).

Scarlet Ibis (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=756) is a blend of rums which were distilled and aged to be blended but Death and Co in NY was looking for a heavy, strong rum that they could use in their bar. The demand was great enough that Eric Seed imported some more from Europe where it was originally imported as a blending rum.

So what do you think the longevity of it will be? (Scarlet Ibis).

I think I successfully hijacked a Cohete thread!

There were several bottles of the Ibis on the shelf. Worth a grab at $32 if you think it won't be reappearing soon or at least maybe not with regularity?

We didn't bring this out as a "brand" but as initially a private bottling. As our friends at D&C have friends, we brought more out to the limits of the production and the kindness of our bottlers. Please don't get mad at us when it's gone - it wasn't envisioned for ongoing production, but enjoyable while it lasts.

I have been a fan of The Scarlet Ibis as a light sipper and as a stellar component of a few of my cocktails. This past Christmas, I got quite a few complements when I used it as a component in my variant of the Kapu-Kai. thankyou.gif

Back to Cohete. I see it every so often. It has Guarana listed as an ingredient in the bottles which I have.

I have been doing a fair bit of business with Eric Seed from Alpenz. He has a lot of niche brands that sell very well. I just ordered the Scarlet Ibis. I'm looking forward to trying it.

The Scarlet Ibis makes a rich and excellent daiquiri. It is a fine mixer.

Everything that comes from Alpenz seems to be great for mixing. I've met some bartenders that work with their products. You need a degree in chemistry to figure out how they make some of these drinks. They are so exact with their measurements it boarders on obsession.
