Has anyone in the US tried to buy rum from shopdr.com? They say they can't ship to some states, but no mention of California, where I am. Could this be a way to get the ever-elusive Brugal Extra Viejo?

I don't know this store, but you won't find Brugal Extra Viejo in the US, that label isn't exported to the US from the Dominican Republic.

There are three Brugal choices here, but none of the "extra." They have Brugal Anejo, Brugal Gold, and Brugal White. Search 'rum' and you'll find it on page 3. I just received my first order from this online store, and everything went extremely well. The shipping was reasonable (better if you order multiple items), as were the prices for what I was looking for--English Harbor, Mount Gay Extra Old, and Pyrat XO. I had to have my Appleton 21 back ordered.

Teach, what do you think of the Appleton 21? I know a place that has a bottle in stock, but I don't know if I want to spend that cash. I do love the other Appletons, but I don't often like the aged stuff with an overabundance of oak/char.

I looked at the site today, and if you click on liquor at the top left hand of the page, it takes you to a page that shows the extra viejo for sale. The other rums on the page are all Brugal also, and the show the DR labeling,
instead of the American labels. I think I will order the extra and see what happens.

The bottle shown is the one which is not imported by Shaw Ross, the USA importer. It will be interesting to see who imports that bottle of rum.

Well, I ordered the rum. I will let you know, as the info on the import should be on the bottle. It is shipped from the Bronx, NY.

Scottes, I have never tasted anything like Appleton 21. You're right about its cost; if you can find it for under $100.00, you're doing well. I saw all of the aged Appleton Rums featured in a segment of "Three Sheets," a show on MOJO, one of the HD channels. Until that time, I had never known about, tasted or been interested in rum other than Appleton Special or VX, which I was introduced to when on vacation in Jamaica. As I was watching "Three Sheets," I thought that it was something that I wanted to try at least once in my life. Last November, I found it at Pop's for just under $80.00 (now it's $117.00 or something like that at Pop's), so I ordered it (my first $88.00 bottle, with shipping added). It is, in addition to what all the experts claim, and for my lack of a better way to describe it, "sacramental." It's true that I am new to this world, and there may be rums that rival it for less money, but I have never tasted a spirit like it before. In the course of an evening, after sipping on a measure of Appleton 21, nothing else tastes good to me. Even the Appleton Extra is disappointing if my palate has been treated to this exceptional drink. It is a highly allocated item and a rare find at certain times of the year. The Wine Chateau has a bottle on back order for me; they say 1-2 months before they have it. In my humble and inexperienced opinion, if you have an opportunity to try it and can afford it, go for it. Great blog that you have too. Thanks

Dang, the local place has it for $63.99! That's worth 2 hours of driving I'd say!

Thanks Teach!

A few years ago I found a shelf full of Appleton 21 in a KMart in St Thomas that was marked $9.99 and of course I bought all I could carry. Apparently the highly paid clerk has opened the bottle, looked at the inventory sheet and located the first price he found on the list. I'll be back in St Thomas in a few days and will definitely look for a few more bottles, but I'm not holding my breath.

Holy crap, Appleton 21 is great rum. I just had it at the Salt Rock Grill in Indian Rocks, Florida (just down the way from Clearwater Beach). They had it on their menu for I think $10. What a deal! And they gave me a huge pour.

I posted my review of it here:

Appleton Estate 21 Year Rum (http://www.liquoranddrink.com/Ingredients/588-Appleton-Estate-21-Year-Rum/)

Sacramental is a good way of putting it. And I've never had a rum tail with jasmine or green tea before...wow.
