Any one tried Starr Ultra Superior Light Rum from Africa? Great bottle but I have yet to see their name come up on this site?
Ed,
Have you tried many Rums from Africa? Do they have a long culture of making rum?

Ive got a bottle of it and it tastes like a typical decent-quality white rum. Ive yet to try a blind taste test with other whites though, to judge its actual flavor and quality.
But its selling point is definetly its packaging.

I have spent a fair bit of time in Mauritius where this rum is made. In Mauritius and Europe (outside the USA), it is sold as Green Island. Maker is International Distillers. They do no fermentation. The first distillations are done by Gray's & Co. and/or United/Medine Sugar. Then it is reworked by International.
Local bars refill the Green Island bottles with Goodwill rum from the same original source at 1/4 the price.

I would put it above the norm. But it is subtle!

They're pretty good rums - marketed here as Green Island. The spiced is the well worth a look - a good naturally flavoured rum.
Ian Burrell, my crazy busy RumFest partner, should be able to tell us more once he gets back from his trip to the distillery in a couple of weeks......
I spent a night with a bottle of Starr once. The bartender was shocked that anyone had ordered it.
I was shocked it was on the shelf in an El Torito.

Sounds like the start of a bawdy tale :)

Have you tried many Rums from Africa?
I have bottle Mainstay Rum which is from South Africa, but is also contract made by Gray's & Co. from Mauritius. I don't know of any other rums that are actually made in Africa.
Mauritius has 6 distilleries, makes quite a few rums, and does get African trade preferences. But I think it is a bit of a stretch to call these African rums.
On my shelves I have:
Goodwill - Mauritius
Gray’s & Co. - Mauritius:
7 Seas Gold
7 Seas Light
Big Jack
De Luxe Gold
De Luxe Light
De Luxe Prestige
L’Amite Gold
L’Amite Light
Mainstay
New Grove
Old Mill
Tropical
Rhum de L’Isle de France
International Distillers - Mauritius:
Flambouyant
Green Island
White Diamond
Medine Sugar / United Spirits - Mauritius:
Blue Bay B.
Cascavelle
Mon Plaisir
Oxenham - Mauritius:
Bougainville Citronelle
Bougainville Light
Bougainville Vanille
Bougainville Vieux Domaine
Fregate Dark
Fregate Light
St Aubin Agricole - Mauritius

You must have extensive shelf space my good man! I hadn't heard of a few of those.
Do you have a list of what else you have on those groaning shelves of yours?

His collection is a sight to behold. His collection would easily fill my entire house from wall to wall.

Your collection is fantastic - quite a few I haven't tried (and would like to). I guess these all qualify as research for Temptryst?
It's great fun to collect - rums are also a justifiable business expense :)
Couple of questions;
Railean Texas Rum, Treaty Oak Rum and Ronrico Silver - Never had a Texan/Kentucky rum before, what are these like? Are they very 'bourbony'?
Vohemar Vaynilla Bourbon Rum - Madagascar - That also sound superb, what's it like?

How wise would it be to create a new product without solid points of reference to see where one stood in comparison to the competition?

I`m a bit curious on a rum from Madagascar, Dzama vieux rum 10 years and also their vanilla rum. They also have a 6 year old rum.
I haven`t tried any of them yet.

Ronrico is pure bottom shelf.
Railean and Treaty Oak are both less then 6 months on the shelves. Both are highly distilled and filtered for almost a vodka-like white rum... less flavor than Flor de Cana White.

The closest thing to a dark Starr rum is Flamboyant Vieux Rhum also from International Distillers Mauritius Ltd. It had been several years since I tasted it, so tonight presented a fine opportunity to pull it down from the shelf and have another taste. This is the aged version of Starr/Green Island. The French influence is obvious from the first taste. Taste tells me that this was aged in French oak casks giving a delicate aromatic complexity that brings together the attributes of a light rum and a fine cognac.
