I just learned that half of the last cases of St Vincent Extra Gold Rum (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=271) that were imported to the US will be on the shelves at BevMo (http://www.bevmo.com) in the next few days. This rum was originally imported by West Indies Spirits (http://www.realrum.com/products/StVincent/) in about 1999 but unfortunately that company is no longer importing this rum. Rum from St Vincent is now being imported by another company but that company didn't see a market for this aged gold rum.

In St Vincent this rum was bottled as Captain Bligh and was one of the rums that inspired me to write my first book. This was just one of the treasures I discovered that was literally unknown, even in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The label was changed for import to the US because the original label didn't look very professional and there were concerns about negative connotations about the infamous Captain.

This rum isn't listed on the BevMo site, but since the number of cases is limited it may never be listed there. But if you go to one of their stores and ask for it, they should see this rum in their system. The UPC code is

I have a bottle of this rum, and it is wonderful. A friend who visited St. Vincent brought it back for me. I would buy another immediately, except BevMo does not ship to Florida. For those of you with access, I suggest a purchase, if the price is fair. If one found its way into your possession that you do not want, I would be willing to pay for the bottle and shipping, or trade if possible............

Not so, my rum guzzling friends. They didn't have this last night, it may take a few days for shipping, stocking etc. As a smarter man than me once said, "Rum wasn't built in a day."

I have Captain Bligh Rhum Paille and find it quite interesting. It's the favorite rum in St. Vincent among tourists at 80 proof. The smooth flavor of the used bourbon barrels is evident.

The locals prefer the very strong rum at 169 proof.

Last year, I bought a bottle of the Sunset Gold at the Beverage Warehouse in LA, CA just to try it. I was pleasantly surprised by its smoothness and genuine taste attesting to the lack of caramel to achieve its color. I went back and got the other 3 bottles which they had in stock. I've drunk this rum neat or on the rocks on many occasions. It makes a very slick substitute for any tiki drink calling for a gold rum. It has a strong enough character to hold its own in any drink which I have shaken. I will be looking forward to the new source, Ed!

My Bottle is the Captain Bligh Gold Rum/Rum Paille also. Very versatile,
can be sippied neat, on the rocks, and works well in cocktails.

Captain Bligh Rhum Paille is a new one to me. I've drunk Captain Bligh Golden Rum but have yet to see seen Rhum Paille, is this a new product?

I'm surprised a distillery on St Vincent would use the French spelling for RUM. The reference to Paille is interested and may be an attempt to generate more interest in their rum from the French.

Paille means 'straw' in French. The word was used by a number of Martinique distilleries for their straw-colored rums. St James had trademarked the name Rhum Paille, and all of the other distillers changed their name to things like 'Amber' and 'Élevé Sous Bois.' Today even St James doesn't use the word 'Paille' on their label.

I guess this means I've been working too hard instead of sailing and drinking rum in the islands.

the label is marked as both golden rum and rhum paille. It's the same. At about $8 a bottle, I'd say it's one of the best bargains in the south windward isles.

My bottle says both: Golden rum and rhum paille. The rum is Captain Blighs Sunset , and on the bottom of the label it says Golden Rum/Rhum Paille.

That explains why the Sunset Extra Gold is now available. What you have is a new label. The Sunset Extra Gold was the first gold rum imported to the US from St Vincent.

No sighting of it, yet, at BevMo's in southern California. I'll keep looking, though.

I'll post again on this one when I know it's been shipped from the distributor. The product is in California but is being delayed due to paperwork.

Hi Ed and everyone,

Funny I have been tracking St Vincent Extra Gold Rum since early Novemeber trying to acquire some bottles. I finally learned from Malcolm that he did in fact sell the 100 cases to Bock Spirit and Wines in SF Ca who was giving me the run around now as to who actually bought the rum from them.

Malcolm told me to talk to Ed who might have more intel on what was going with the rum. Ed was nice enough let me know that Bevmo did in fact buy all 100 cases from Bock Spirit and Wines in SF Cal.

I have been waiting and watching Bevmo's site daily and all of a sudden today I see that Bevmo was down to 48 bottles, geese how they sell that many so fast? Well I got myself 5 bottles quick. I'm exhausted. I feel like a spy trying to get the information, lol!

Now if I can get my hands on a few bottles of Don Lorenzo Reserve Dark Rums. Any help?????

This is a hard one to let slip by. Cal will not ship to Fl, as I would have purchased 2 or 3 myself.

I received 5 bottles yesterday and have sampled mine and am loving it so far. It has a very distinct taste. I find warming it slightly to take the chill off of it like a good cognac opens up it bouquet and it's smell is intoxicating. Sorry not the greatest at writing descriptions yet, lol! If I can help anyone acquire without breaking laws let me know. I'm in Cal and ordering a few more bottles tomorrow.

All right, all right. I have not yet been led astray by recommendations from those on this forum, and I am positioned to follow yet another recommendation. Before I do, please allow me to ask for a little assistance. Since I won't be able to taste this rum before ordering, I would appreciate a few tasting descriptions.

The price is great, but I don't want to order a case of rum that doesn't fit the profile of the kind of rums I generally like. If it is an "iffy" situation, I will order one or two bottles. If it sounds great, I'll order a case plus and share with my friends who are also rum drinkers.

Again, I would appreciate a quick description/comparison/notes on the flavor profile of this rum. Thanks in advance for your help.

my notes on Captain Bligh Golden Rum by Sunset: sweet nose, spicy taste, bit of caramel, charred wood, warm smooth finish. I would not stock up on it heavily based on its rank among my favorites, however it's hard to come by, like trying to buy Coors beer east of the Mississippi back in the 70s.

I have a few clients in St. Vincent and make a point of bringing some back when visiting them and having them deliver some when they visit me once a year. I'm fond of the Very Strong Rum at 169 proof since that's so unusual and my mouth has never experienced anything like it.

Just received another bottle of Zacapa XO from a client coming to the Miami International Boat Show from the Turks And Caicos Islands this evening. It's great to have friends and associates in strategic locations.

I really enjoy this rum, I like the spiciness, and it is smooth. It is very hard to find, that is why I would purchase an extra 2 or 3 bottles. I am half way through one that someone brought back for me from St. Vincent. Would I buy a case? No.

Great. Thanks for the tasting notes and additional suggestions. I'll give it a shot with a couple of bottles. If I like it, I will have one more in reserve. If I do not, I will have something to share.

When I was sailing up and down the islands I would pick up a case when I'd visit the distillery. Invariably, I'd run out of Captain Bligh before I'd get back to St Vincent. While it wasn't on the top of my list of sipping rums, it was always near the top of my short list of mixing rums.

BevMo got their shipment and it's on the shelves of the stores in the San Francisco Bay area. I picked up a case and will use it in any drink calling for a gold rum. I'm glad to hear, if I understand correctly, that it lives on under the Captain Bligh moniker. What I really like is the strong character of its taste. It doesn't fade when mixed with lime or other fruit juices. It is not a sweet rum, so, it works well in drinks which call for a syrup.

Rumdog46, there are actually more bottles of the St. Vincent Sunset Extra Gold at BevMo's. You will need to use the same search keyword, but change the "store" in the location menu. Then, you will see more bottles at over 8 other stores in the SF Bay area. I hope this helps.

Thank you fellow rumdog,l ol! I did see that and ordered 4 more bottles for safe keeping. I do find this a great rum especially for it's low price. I like warming it just a little to take the chill off the rum. My preferred method is a nice candle and pour 2 fingers worth in a nice cocktail glass and just warm it ever so gentley over the flame for a few moments really brings out it's full flavor and intoxicating smell. Geese now I need to pour me one.

Hank, I am not sure if this is anything, but the St. Vincent being sold by BevMo here in CA was "stuck" in the San Francsico Bay area for weeks. I flew up and bought many cases. Now, this week, it has arrived in the Southern California stores and I went and bought more. So, it seems that distribution is really slow for these close-outs.

I just heard from the Illinois distributor that St Vincent Extra Gold Rum will be available in Binny's if it isn't already. I'd check the Clark Street or south loop stores first. Unfortunately their spirits buyer is in Scotland this week perusing and presumably sipping some scotch.

I have tasted the Captain Bligh Label and the new Extra Gold label. There is a slight difference, as there can be from batch to batch. I like the Extra Gold bottling a little better. It is a touch richer in taste. Of course, the Bligh may have lost a little opened on the shelf for 3 months, although I protected it with gas. No matter, it will be the first one finished. This rum goes so well with coconut water that I will have a easy time emptying the Bligh. I do like the old label better.

After a futile mini-search for coconut water locally, we're awaiting delivery of some to mix with our much-loved Sunset Extra Gold. We hope that BevMo puts the St. Vincent back on sale soon, since rumdog007 seems to have left a few cases behind. :D

How about opinionated inquiry? How would you guys that have tasted SVS, equate it's best usage? Strickly a mixing rum as a gold required recipe ingredient or is it sip-able over ice or neat?

Personally I think it tastes pretty damn good for less than $10 / bottle. It's a slight hair sharp for my sipping preference (even with a cube of ice added), but far from mediocre or one dimensional enough for me to dismiss out of hand as solely a cocktail cutter.

I really like this rum. It does have an edge, but has a nice spicy note to it. I can sip it, but it seems it was made for coco water. A good dram with one large coco water ice cube is my favorite, or a 50/50 mix with a disk of lime.
I agree that it should not be sent to the "just a mixer" shelf.gzzg
