I looked for reviews and there are many references to Flor de Cana 4yrs and 7yrs which seems superb but the 5yrs is the one that is available here in Ontario.

It'd be great if it could be compared to something I've had that I like just not as a sipper just yet. Captain Morgan Private Stock and Plantation Barbados 5yrs" as well as had El Dorado 12 and Appleton's Reserve.

Your thoughts, as a sipper?

Flor de Cana 5 year old rum is a better sipper in my opinion than some other rums but in the line of Flor de Cana it is considered a mixing rum. In the US market, the rumor is that the 5 year is going away.

Thank you for your response Mr. Hamilton.

I'll save my money and try to get either the Flor de Cana 7yrs or 12yrs, at $31 and $41 respectively.

They're an hour away from where I live, that is once they'll deliver it in the Quebec liquor stores branch (SAQ) in Temiscaming.

Since I have such a hard time finding a sipper I can enjoy as is, I might skip the 7year old and go for the 12year old instead, Arctic Wolf has nothing but high praise for it. But then I'll be curious to find out if the 7year old will be enough to satisfy me at $10 saving!

I find the 7yr old to be fine for sipping, although I feel I'm in the minority with that one. It goes for around $20 here, so I don't have any problems mixing it either.

I've yet to open my bottle of the 12yr old, so unfortunately, I'm unable to compare the two at this time.

I don't think you're in the minority Jwilly, but rather that there is always a vocal viewpoint of older=better in the spirits community. I personally think that FDC's column distillate peaks around 7 years.

Having both, I personally think the 7 y/o has a better balance and flavor for sipping than the 12. If you compare them side-to-side, the 12 will have more flavor, having spent longer in barrels. This is a fatal flaw of side-by-side tastings of older rums against younger rums, in that the more delicate flavors of the younger rum won't be as easily perceived compared to the more robust flavors of the older rum.
