Hi everyone

I have been searching the internet the last couple of days, looking for the
perfect rum to give to my girlfriend, for her 32 year old birthday, but it's so difficult to get an idea of whitch rum to buy, since all the people reviewing the rums, of course have different things the like and dont like.

So, i was thinking that you guys could help me out.

I was thinking that i can give you an idea of what kind of flavours she likes and doesnt like (of whitch i know of), and from there i hope to get an idea of what to buy.

Ok, here goes:

1. She LOOOOOves the Ron Zacapa rums and El Dorado, but i think it's time she tries something new :)

2. She doesnt like roms that are to oaky/smoakey/leatherich.

3. I'm thinking a rum with flavours of: Banana, mango, pear, toffee, caramel, marsmellows, chocolade/cocoa, chai tea (cinnamon, cardamom).

4. It has to be an aged, dark rum.

5. 80 $ is the limit.

Any suggestions?

Tommy

Your list of flavours is quite diverse; you might have a hard time finding something off the shelf that has a really distinct note of more than 3 or 4.

How long before her birthday? You might be better off buying something, adding your own herbs and spices, and then hiding it away to infuse for a few weeks. That would have the advantage of being customized JUST for her, which would be quite romantic.

"1. She LOOOOOves the Ron Zacapa"

Ah, I would have suggested that one. ;)

Second suggestion would be the 12yo Ron Diplomatico. I find its flavor to be close to the Zacapa (then again, atm. I only have the 23 solera limited "Etiqueta Negra" here to compare it to).
It's not that sweet, though, but very smooth. Might be a small step towards the "real" Rums. :p

It also has a nice bottle / box – which is a plus for a birthday gift. ;)

That's a good idea! I haven't seen it around for a while, but it looks like Hi-Times has it.

You guys are good!

I googled the Diplomatico, and it sure seems like a good candidate.
It's got all the right flavours (according to the websites i found it on).
The Plantation i think she has tried before, but a very good sugesstion :)

Please keep the ideas coming :)

At first , I'd suggest something from XO (7y or 10y) Guyana. They are both not too expensive and very sweet.
But as she has already tried Eldorado, 8y or 12y Barbancourt would be a good idea for a real change, sweet but different, in your price bracket and a good move for Haiti (plus an attractive colorful box).

I love the Pyrat XO, it's great for sipping and mixing. That's why I have 4 bottles!

Fundacion XX, diplomatico exclusiva (green bottle), vizcaya from my personal experience. I suspect these have sugar added based of pouring viscosity but great sippers anyway. Vizcaya and Fundacion present well visually. Good luck, sounds like you have a plan- get her inebriated then........;-)

Yeah, I still stand by my first recommendation for the E D 21, even though you say you want to stay away from El Dorado....

unless she has had the 21 of course....

but if she hasn't, it would be a very special gift.

ED 21 is a fine rum, but it surprises me that people consider it "sweet".

I haven't had the ED 21, but I found the 12 to be definitely sweet. And delicious!

Naah...the 25 pips it by a mile. And has a price tag to really make her feel you care :-)

Absolutely!

Good luck finding some though. It was a numbered limited edition. I think at this point one would have to pay collector's prices on top of the already significant list price, no?
