View Full Version : how do you savor your rum?

So anyway.....I've been meeting folks into rum and in very instance when I brought them samples of the good stuff their techinque is to sniff, maybe a tiny sip then the shot gets chugged. Seems to be a complete waste of good rum to drink like that, after all the stomach doesn't have taste buds. One week ago at a party I had someone chug my vizcaya dos maderas cedar ridge eldorado 15 and became very tipsy in shot order and have to driven home!.....:-)
What I do is take a medium sized sip, hold it I'm.my mouth, just let it sit there and resist the urge to swallow. The alcohol evaporates and suffuses the sinuses and which I enjoy as I'm holding my breath. I let the rum just slowly trickle down the back of my throat then swallow after 10 - 15 secs.
I'm sure this topic may have been covered before and I apologize if its on the site somewhere. I'm typing on my phone - searching is difficult.
If you have your own way enjoying your rum do post it here. No chugging techinques please!

Alright I have about .25 oz of my most sippable rum (Plantation Barbados 5yrs).
I'll take it neat and do like you post it demerara rum jumbie.
Aye that burned my tongue good and I couldn't help but cough. I had to tilt my head way back to try and move the rum as far back to my throat before swallowing.. It was good on the tongue.
I'll try it your way again, on the rocks next time I drink.
As before I'd just snif and hold it in my mouth for 3 seconds then swallow.

Nose, nose, nose, taste, taste slowly, sip, sip, savour, nose some more and then slowly take a long sip. sometimes I wait a bit for the rum to open up. If by then I haven't figured out what's going on, I have a cold and will defer for another day.
Actually, in spite of all the snooty stuff above, I usually end up adding a drop of water every now and then, and if I don't like it, then I start with the mixers.

I take a sip swirl it over my toung and around my mouth for one or two seconds then swallow and take a slow breath through my mouth and injoy. Almost always drink mine neet sometimes on the rocks.

I think this is a very personal topic and will vary greatly with no correct answer. For me personally every new rum and repeat rum I love my tasting process is essentialy the same.
I have a set of Libby stemless wine glasses I absolutely love for spirits espeicially rum. I throw in six whiskey stones instead of ice which in my opinion bring the rum to a perfect temperature. Normally each tasting is a double shot so I have enough to really appreciate it.
Don't ask me why but those specific Libby glasses are awesome for sniffing and tasting.
After the solo tasting it depends on the spirit. For rum I almost always follow with a rum aand coke made with non-hfcs Mexican coca-cola. I find this mix is the best to bring out he fullest flavor of the rum.
All that said, tasting is extremely personal and there is no wrong method :)
