I did a bit of research on better rums out there for the money a while back. I always drank rum and coke as a cocktail of choice, but wanted a better rum experience. Currently I am drinking Flor De Cana 7 year old, and Cruzan Single Barrel Estate.
FDC7YO is one that is usually stocked at my house and I will drink it with Coke or neat.
When I have a bottle of Cruzan SBE on hand, it is the one I go for when I want rum neat and not diluted.
I have come to appreciate each for their own merits and there are some great reviews out there on each.
I am looking forward to trying out other ones from the same distilleries.
Nice to be here on these forums.
Cheers

Those are great Choices! I began my rum journey with FDC 7 and it is still one of my faves too!

I wouldn't restrict myself with just those 2 distilleries. There's a smorgasbord of great Rums waiting for you to explore. Don't miss it. Btmup.gif

Absolutely.
El Dorado, Pyrat, are on my radar.
I recently picked up some English Harbor 5 at my liquor store which now stocks it.
A very smooth sipping rum for the money, indeed.

Hmmm. Wouldn't spend too much money on the Pyrat's as the orange nose and taste makes it more a liqueur than a true rum. On the other hand El Dorado, Mount Gay, FdeC, Appleton...all these are good Caribbean tots to start with. Good luck and good tasting.
I totally agree about Pyrat being more like a liqueur. Great floater, but a cloyingly sweet sipper.

AS smooth as it is, I just feel it lacks ...well flavour, it is too mild. I still buy it. I am drinking it now as a mater of fact .
It is a nice rum and great value. But the flavours are subtle to me, you must hunt them out, they do not come to you freely.

I agree almost on the Pyrat's It is thick on the tongue, but if you can get it in the USA for a good price it is worth visiting, as it is a very good rum. El Dorado 12 and 15 are wonderful as are the rest on your list (FDeC 7 or older) with a disclaimer for me anyways on Appleton: 12 year old or better, otherwise it has too much burn for the flavour profile offered.

Thanks, gents.
Well since posting this I have delved into some wonderful rums, and spent a lot of my Christmas booze money on some premium rums.
I always seem to have English Harbor, FDC 7 ( for rum and cokes ), El Dorado 12, and Mount Gay XO on hand.
What I am excited about are my latest purchases:
Dos Maderas PX 5+5
Zaya GR ( Trinidad )
Santa Teresa 1796 and
Zacapa Centenario 23.
I have tried all but the Zacapa so far.
I'd also love to find Brugal 1888, Matusalem GR 18, and El Dorado 21, and possibly Abuelo 12 year GR. I will have to wait until the new year for these ones.
