I just found a bottle of Dos Maderas 5+5. What does everybody think of it? What would you compare it to? Thanks

It is good stuff. I leave it as a classification of its own. Maybe like old Zaya. Not the same, but has a similar smooth aged profile. At least for me.

5+5 is pretty good. It's at the sweeter end of what I like, so I think it works best as an after-dinner type of drink. I find it to be somewhat similar to Zacapa 23 but with some noticeable sherry flavor and even (call me crazy) some bartlett pear on the finish.

Hi everybody,
as I said in my introduction post, the Dos Maderas 5+5 is the reason why I started searching for a rum forum. So as not to start a whole new thread, I'd like to deepen the discussion a bit, if I may.
I first tried the 5+5 when I was looking for a good rum as a gift for someone who always admired my (sort of small) collection of rums. My dealer suggested the 5+5 and a Ron Diplomatico. I bought both, but kept the Diplomatico. ;)
Now, since one can never have enough rum in the cabinet, I went to buy a bottle of 5+5 for myself - from the same dealer.
When I first tasted a glas of my bottle, I was a bit startled. I thought it tasted different from the bottle I first got a sample from, and also from the bottle that I had given away as a gift. I met my friend and was able to test both bottles after another and I have to say that I found quite a (small?) difference. Mine does burn more and the other one feels more oily.
I'd even go as far as to say that the price I paid is more than reasonable for the other bottle, but not for mine - I wouldn't have bought it if I had gotten a sample of my bottle. It's still ok, but not that good.
I know that there are differences between age groups, vintages, barrels, but I'm wondering now if such variation is normal for one delivery. I never experienced such a difference in taste - from bottle to bottle - with any other rum.

I absolutely get the sherry. But, my palate does not read it as sweet. It is one of my favorites. It almost hits me as a whiskey, at first. The finish is, decidedly, rum.

Sherry is almost too pronunced. Adding a few drops of water helps. I'm looking for 5+3. Re the differences from batch to batch- my second bottle of vizcaya was quite a bit different than the first - it has a definite dunder flavor (which I like).

I just came across this one where I live and this is some really good stuff. I agree that I don't find it sweet at all. The rum knocks exactly what I don't like about sherry right out leaving an interesting set of flavours that I quite enjoy. Good rum all around.
