Has anyone had the chance yet to try the new Brugal 1888? What did you think?

Blurb from Brugal:
BRUGAL 1888 RUM
Over 120 years of devotion to the meticulous craftsmanship of only the best of rums have inspired the Brugal Family Master Distillers to create 'Brugal 1888', a distinguished addition to their Family legacy. Since 1888 and over 5 generations, the Brugal Family has perfected rum of exceptional finesse and 'Brugal 1888' pays tribute to the year in which Don Andres Brugal Montaner founded the Brugal company in the Dominican Republic.

The Brugal Master Distillers are dedicated to preserving the family legacy and, using their skills, have produced an annual limited release rum. As is the case of the entire Brugal family rum portfolio, 'Brugal 1888' is a product of skilled craftsmanship. The rum's double-distillation and double-ageing, both in American white oak barrels and first fill sherry oak casks from Spain, transform the rum gradually over time, imbuing 'Brugal 1888' with the character and personality of a unique and contemporary rum.

The delicate care and precise mastery which the Brugal Master Distillers devote to each and every stage of the rum process will enable the production of a special limited edition of 'Brugal 1888'. For Don Gustavo Ortega Zeller Brugal, member of the 5th generation of Master Distillers within the Brugal Family, ''the experience of creating a unique rum, new and different, has been extremely exciting. The excellence of our work resides in knowing how the liquid behaves during different phases and under varying circumstances. With 'Brugal 1888', we have developed a way to make rum beyond conventionalities, obtaining a liquid which is absolutely extraordinary. Our 'Brugal 1888' is aged exclusively in horizontally resting casks, guaranteeing permanent contact between wood and liquid, and interplaying with the maturing sugar cane spirit to provide it with its characteristic colour, aroma and know-how, essential to such an acclaimed rum.''

Tasting notes:

Color: Dark amber, clear and brilliant.

Nose: An exquisite scented bouquet, evolving over time through undisturbed ageing and blending of flavors of varied provenance. Fascinating complexity, with spicy notes, hints of chocolate, roasted coffee beans and reminiscent of cinnamon and dried fruits.

Palate: Pleasant and smooth, delightfully alive, full-bodied, with a notable finish of toffee caramel, wood and licorice.

Finish: Throughout its journey, Brugal 1888 leaves a sweet, lingering and sublime after-taste which denotes perfection.

"Throughout its journey, Brugal 1888 leaves a sweet, lingering and sublime after-taste which denotes perfection."

That is not informational, it is promotional. Overhyped reviews like that leave a bad taste in my mouth before I even try the rum.

Well, that is from the company website.... which is why I'm asking the expert's opinion!

I think most company website 'reviews' use similarly promotional wording to describe their product

It is now available in D.C. though I've not yet tried it.

Seems pricey. I'd have to sell it for $49.99. For the exact same price, I can sell Zafra 21-yr from Panama, which is shatteringly good. For that matter, I can even sell Zacapa for the same price.

I shall wait to try it before passing judgement, though.

I got it and I like it. It was a nice surprise. Pricey? Yes. Nice sipping rum? Yes. Best out there? No, but it's pretty darned good.

Been sipping the 1888 tonight.

Yessir, I like it.

I'm not so swift on the descriptors, but my best shot would be a creamy oak flavor on the dry side, with a hint of sweet (honey?) and some tanins on the fiinish.

Very enjoyable. I have been favoring dryer rums lately.

Had to pour a little bit of this to chime in real time.

A lot of wood on the nose, some nutmeg.

Definitely a dryer rum...a bit of cinnamon burn...no doubt a Brugal rum...I like it.

I think this one would work well in a rum manhattan or old fashioned...
