My local Costco liquor store is selling 1.75 Flor de Cana's 4 year old Gold for $16. They can't keep it in stock. The last time I was in, someone was buying three cases. I went back two days later to buy a few bottles for a friend and they were already sold out. They have never seen anything like this. When you consider handles of Bacardi cost more than this 4 year old rum, it really shouldn't be much of a surprise.
Personally, I like it. It is a great mixing rum. For the price, you really can't beat it.
What do you all think of this rum?

I had this once before when I was vacationing in Pismo Beach and really enjoyed. The local liquor store did not have too much of a selection. This was one of the few "non Bacardi" rums they had in the little store. I found it quite good and actually used it for sipping that week. I would definitely buy more if it was available in my area. Was lucky enough to find a local store that had the FDC 18yr in for Xmas so I am looking forward to trying that one as well.

Buy as much as you can. I bet it's a run-off. I wouldn't bet on going there (Costco) in 6 months and replacing your empty bottle you got today. Don't forget the parenting just switched on Flor de Cana as well.

I think it's a fine mixing rum, especially for that price. I like the fuller, "rummier" taste of Appleton Estate better, but sometimes the Flor Gold works better.

Flor de Cana is a much lighter rum than Appleton Estate but is a good mixer. They also bottle a 4 yo white (http://ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=143) which is one of the most popular white rums among serious bartenders across the country. I'm not talking about bars that pour speed rack specials, but rather bars that care about what they're pouring.
Flor de Cana has had some very aggressive pricing in the past but like has been noted, don't delay or you're probably going to be disappointed.

Total Wine has the big bottles of Flor gold 4 and white 4 at very reasonable prices also. It does look like a sell off.

Edward,
I found it interesting that you have noticed conscientious bartenders using Flor de Cana's Extra Dry. It is an excellent white rum and the only one I use when white rum is called for. You just can't beat the quality and price point.
It seems the usual progression is Bacardi, Cruzan, then Flor de Cana. The jump from one to the other is significant.

Update: after proselyting friends on behalf of Flor de Cana Gold and receiving comments in this thread, I picked up three cases of 1.75 bottles. Only one is for me, but I now have a total of nine bottles set by just in case.
The manager said they plan on carrying it from now on and hasn't heard anything about price increases or diminished supplies. Of course, this was after he rung up the three cases. We'll see.

I love it when people make comments like the one you quoted. For all the *typical* manager at a Costco (truthfully) knows, it might not be available in his entire region starting next week.
In plain English, what he or she meant to say is: As long as their buyer can bring it in - the store will continue to carry it, so far as she or he knows.

Flor is a great Rum. I first tried it when I was in Central America visiting the Company's Factory that I work for (Cigars). It was pretty much the only good spirit that you could find. I fell in love with it. I tell all of my friends to keep a bottle around instead of their standard Bacardi. I have nothing against Bacardi, but I try to show some love to the smaller brands. My wife (from Puerto Rico) drinks enough Bacardi for the both of us. I say buy buy buy!!!

While I keep both Cruzan and Flor de Cana whites on my shelf, for most applications I prefer Cruzan. I like the broader flavor. But overall I consider them to be on a par.
Between Cruz dark and Flor dark, I perfer the Flor.
