hey rumbullionists,
bought me a bottle of "Don LORENZO 151 overproof" to float on my planters punch yesterday. after smelling and tasting (with a little water). it reminded me of me of the "dark reserve" or maybe the "gold reseve" by todhunter-mitchell (distillery in freeport, bahamas producing don lorenzo, ricardo, flavoured rums and a variety of other liquors). unfortunately i had no bottle at hand to compare, but could it be that they sell the overproof with more water under another name? especially because i once read that rum often ist distilled to a higher proof, ageing like this and then streched down to that normal 40%vol alc...
however, i will get me a bottle of the dark reserve tomorrow and check that out (even because as far as i remember it is a nice, little sweet, full bodied Bahamian rum and will cost me less than 10$ per liter :-)

Most rum made from molasses is distilled to more than 80% abv. Then if it is age it is reduced to 80% abv before it is put in the barrels. Once the rum has aged, the alcohol is further reduced for bottling. Most 151 proof rums aren't aged as long as their lower proof counterparts, but the better overproof rums are aged just as long just bottled at a higher proof.

Some overproof rums are little more than high proof spirits colored with a little caramel to make them look nicer. The idea is that people who are drinking overproof rum aren't concerned with the quality as much as they are the quantity of alcohol.

I really like Black Seal 151 and had a bottle of Lemonhart 151 which was quite good. I haven't tried any others.

bluewave is dead on!

Goslings 151 is great, so is Lemonhart 151, and Red Flame by Matusalem (which i think isn't made any more, Cruzan Clipper [120] and 151 are both excellent, Wray & Nephew is good in juice based drinks because the alcohol esters are covered/used by the fruit.

With respect to those we've tried in his list, we have to agree with forrest. The El Dorado Superior High Strength is, however, preferred to the Lemonhart 151, Cruzan Clipper and W&N Overproof on hand. The Goslings and Cruzan 151s, and Matusalem Red Flame are yet to be tried, but all except the Matusalem (first notice above) are intended for the near future.

Aren't there two versions of the Cruzan 151, a light and a dark? How do they compare?

The light is not nearly as good.
Matusalem Red Flame has been discontinued-- unfortunately.
Even though i have never actually had it . . .i am SURE El DORADO OVER-PROOF Is A SUPERIOR PRODUCT!!

Is the El Dorado Superior High Strength a white rum or is it aged?

We've got a bottle of El Dorado Overproof which is aged and has caramel added. Is it the same?

Being a biased Jamaican, I'm not going to argue with Wray, although I talked the Green Island Rum importers to the UK to produce a Green Island 151 white rum. It's not bad. Available for anyone coming over to London for this years RumFest. They also gave me a bottle of 151 Flamboyant Rum. It's an 8 year old that makes one of the best Mai Tai's i've tasted.

That sounds VERY interesting..! cheers.gif i wonder how that one would compare to the best i`ve tasted which is the 15 year Silver Seal Demerara? if i make it to the rumfest with a bottle opf the SS, let´s make a comp taste of the two..
