I've really been enjoying my sea wynde, smith and cross and pusser's blue. would like to step up the pungency a notch but can't seem to find anything.........research shows i should look for something like hampden DOK but can't find any examples of that specifically.....is there something similar out there?

found that renegade has an edition of the hampden (not sure if "DOK") but i suppose it will be colored by their aging process - also costs $$$$.

any suggestions where i can find the stinky stuff :-) ?

If you can still find them, Murry McDavid had a Jamician Hampden 13 year.

Murray MacDavid and Renegade are the only two that I know of that are sold in the US, Smith & Cross is a relatively high ester rum that was distilled to be aged and then blended in small quantities in other rums. Most people don't want to drink such high ester spirits so there is only a small market for those rums.

Thx rum buff and Ed. Used wine-searcher.com both bottles are in range $80-$90 here. Still, I may be tempted by the renegade.

real DOK is close to undrinkable since it is just too high in esters. Next to that its very unstable, since its batch distilled and ester content do fluctuates all the time, ranging from approx 1200 to 2200 gr/phlaa.( as far as I know, all whiskies in the world are anywhere between 100 and 400). Its used as a component in a intermediate high ester Jamaica blend to create a stable building block to be used in blends. It is a unique "mark" which has been used for centuries in High Ester Jamaican Rum intermediate blends.

Thanks scheer. It continues to amaze me that there is such an interest in things that are not very good on their own. I cilantro, but don't eat cilantro salads, it's more of a seasoning than a main course.

But hey, pick your poison!
