Canada: LCBO recalls Old Monk Rum from India; glass particles found in some bottles

November 28th

TORONTO - The LCBO is recalling a brand of rum from India because glass particles were found in some bottles.
The company has also suspended sales of the 750-millilitre bottles of Old Monk Rum. The LCBO said the problem appears to be related to the bottling process.
Customers returning bottles of this product to the LCBO will receive a full refund.
George Soleas, vice-president of LCBO quality assurance, says the product was recalled immediately in the interest of customer safety.

I picked up a 180 ml bottle of Old Monk while in California for the holidays. After emptying the bottle into glasses while looking for glass, I sampled it with a friend. It is a very sweet rum that tastes artificial. It was smoother than I expected, and was much better all around than I'd anticipated. The approximately two ounces I had was not enough to help me arrive at a finished conclusion. I will try it again. Has anyone else tried this Indian rum?

I've had Old Monk and a few other Indian rums and found it to be dry in body and finish with a dry smoky mouthfeel. The flavor profile seemed to be fairly small without a lot of depth between the first sip and the finish.

Old Monk is a great rum in my book.. If you can find it, try some Old Cask too. I was working over in India about 12 years ago and Old Monk and Old Cask kept me going. I had some friends from Canada bringing in a bottle once in a while, but it has been a tough find. Great neat or on the rocks, but one great mix we found there, was mango juice.
