The holiday season is approaching and I'm getting more email requests than I can answer about what rum to buy that special man or woman. I'd like to help Santa Claus and his helpers by asking you to post some ideas of what you would like to receive this year from the person that makes you so happy all year long.
To be as helpful as possible to that special person who might be reading this thread, please update your profile to include your location since many rums aren't available everywhere.

Mr. Claus,
Pretty please put a bottle of Vizcaya VXOP in my stocking instead of coal like last year. I'll be good, I promise.

I would love my Pyrat Cask or Angostura 1824!
I'd like the county to give me final approval for my distillery building since the equipment is going to ship soon!

I'm not stuck on any one brand. I'm always happy to receive rum, whether it's an old favorite or something new and interesting. I do prefer dark rums though.
I guess if someone asked me for a list it would contain the following rums I've yet to try (in no particular order):
Cruzan Diamond Estate
El Dorado 15 or 21 Yr. Old
Santa Teresa 1796
Appleton Estate 21 Yr. or XO
10 Cane Rum
Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva
Gosling Black Seal or Old Rum
Rhum Barbancourt 8 or 15 Yr. Old
Depaz Blue Cane Rhum
I'd probably just point to my rum shelf (http://www.rumdood.com/articles/doods-rum-shelf.aspx) and say "If it isn't on that list and it's not named "Captain" or "Bacardi" and isn't some flavored syrup, then bring it on in!"

Count, have you had the El Dorado 15 yet? I like it better than the 21, and it's half the price. It's one of my favorites.
And... I seem to have lost my bottle of ED15. I can't find it anywhere, and asked a friend to check his bar where I remember it last.... It was either drunk or I've completely misplaced it. Of course, knowing it's missing makes me want it even more... That's what I get for inventorying my collection. :-(

Yeah, ED15 is awesome.

I'm surprised no one has asked for any Zaya, Pampero Anniversario, Santa Teresa 1796, Falernum - for the holidays, Barbados Plantation Rum, Brugal Extra Viejo and Barcelo Imperial come to mind. But the Flor de Cana or Abuelo Extra Anejo would be nice gifts as well.

I suspect that many of us already have many, most, or all of these on our shelves. And so I am asking Santa for anything I am having a hard time finding (or may be a bit pricey). The only one of these fine rums that I don't already have on my shelf is the Brugal Imperial.

As you have probably noticed by now, my database isn't perfect and occasionally, hopefully only occasionally, you'll get an error when searching for something special. And sometimes when you're not searching for anything special. Yesterday on the way to another airport, I checked the error stats on my site and realized that I didn't have a picture of that rum on in my labels folder but corrected it last night.
This morning, I got this in an email from friends who just left St John on their sailboat. "Say, we heard a funny story while in St. John about the world's most expensive bottle of rum that you left in someone's car in Trinidad while riding the the airport. Don't know how true it is but it got us howling."
Well it's true, on both accounts. I did leave a bottle rum in a friend's car on the way to the airport. And yes, it was a very expensive bottle.
I'm looking for another picture of the label to post, but for right now here are my notes on this rum (http://ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=197).

Ed,
You do have a great job. That bottle you posted "this rum" made my mouth water. I have come to a conclusion. "Rum has only one equal. That might be a good Port Wine.

Just kidding, thus the smiley. But I guess that I noticed that there was no rum that I'm currently wishing for. Well, I guess a bottle of 1623 would be nice, but I could think of other, non-rum things instead of that.

The La Favorite 33 . Yes, I have heard of this rum and have been aware of it for some time (thanks to Ed). It is one of the reasons I want to visit Martinique. Being a rhum agricole Junkie,:p I would want to visit to bring home a large stash of rhums that we could never get here. Thanks Ed, for posting the link to the rum on our site!!:D

There are a few flavored vodkas that truly are outstanding. The 2 brands worth owning (that are currently on the shelves) are Charbay and Hangar One. Neither has the supersweetness and/or artificial flavors that are so common. Both are great yet represent entirely different approaches. Both are infused with natural fruits, but Hanger One does so BEFORE the final distilation, while Charbay does so AFTER. Charbay has color and a hint of sweetness, while Hanger One is fully dry.

It has all the bad things of the white rum... plus super sweetness. I thought that it was even worse.

Well here's a rum that might be worth having under the tree.
Maui Gold Reserve Rum Cask No.1 (http://storesense4.megawebservers.com/stores/h/haleakaladistillers.com/index.html)
At $79 for 375ml of this rum, I think the value is in the fact that as they call it THE RAREST RUM ON PLANET EARTH!
I think the value lies in the collector's value. I've yet to meet a rum distiller who made his best rum on his first try.

Braddah Kimo's been distilling for a very long time, judging from his bio. Mostly whiskey, but he spent some time in Port Morant. The rums I've tried from them have been decent, nothing exciting but decent.

I like his rum, his dark rum has a nice robust flavor. As any distiller will tell you it takes time to find the rhythm of fermenting a new raw material, and then you've got to get to know the still. I suspect that rum will only get better. He's developed a loyal following in Hawaii and someday his rums will make it to the US.

I asking the great gift giver in the sky (or anyone else who intercepts this message) to deliver a few unique products I've not yet had the privilege of adding to my meager collection.
Appleton Master Blenders Legacy Rum
This should be available in the US by next summer.
Zacapa Centennario XO (30 year blend)
Hoping to see this in the US in February.
Trigo Reserva Aneja
A delightful artisinal rum from Puerto Rico, should be in US this summer.
La Favorite Cuveй Spйciale de la Flibuste
I'm hoping to visit Martinique in 2008.
La Favorite Rhum Vieux
Hoping to see distribution in South Florida soon, along with the "real thing" cane syrup.
