A very good friend has found, more like unearthed, on a trip to St. Croix, a couple of bottles of rum neither of us have seen before - Ron Macorix Añejo Superior. It is a Dominican Republic rum.
There is very little information about this rum on the web, and we are uncertain and doubtful this exact rum is produced by its distiller any longer.
We will be opening this find when he gets back next week. Does anyone at the Ministry have any experience or information with this rum?

name rings a bell jjwest, check on the dominicanrums website and there might be more info. I think its made by the same people that make vizcaya and ron cubaney, don't quote me though as I am throwing from the hip

I found a few bottles of Ron Macorix in St Croix and St Thomas in the mid to late 90s. Macorix is a small town in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic, near where the Brugal distillery is located. It was imported to the US for a few years in the early 90s but according to the importer the rum was discontinued. I never saw Macorix in the Dominican Republic when I was there in the late 80s through the early part of this century.
As for the flavor profile, I always thought it was a little sharp in the finish, but a good value and I usually bought more of it when I found it on St Croix. The merchants in St Thomas seemed to think it was worth more than those on St Croix. I found two or three different labels of Macorix rum, Añejo, Añejo (http://ministryofrum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=42121#post42121) Superior and I seem to remember on one occasion finding a Blanco under the Macorix name.

It was available here up until middle of last year. It is a pretty good mixer, fairly light bodied and similar to Barcelo Añejo. It was fairly inexpensive at around $10 to $12 a bottle. Not sure what the status is of it in the DR though. I have kept a couple of unopened bottles of the collection!! I just found some Indian rum here recently aswell, but haven't had the courage to open one yet!!

Thanks for the note neatdrinker. I have been told by a previous importer that Macorix was no longer imported to the US. Can you tell me if you back label has the US government warning in English?

Good evening sirs!
On my last trip to the DR is was able to find a fairly quite a few bottles of Macorix 8 Anos. It is veri well regarded in La Romana. I still have to open it to judge for myself... it's made in San Pedro de Macoris by PJ Carrion & Company.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

Now that i had a sip, i forgot how different a taste this has.
Almost like a mild licorice or anise.

Just returned from the DR (Punta Cana) and like Patapouf said Macorix 8 yr was readily available almost everywhere. I saw it in the shops at the Catalonia Royal where I stayed as well as many local merchant shops and Don Lucas cigar shop. Don Lucas also had Brugal Siglo de Oro and Unico as well as many many other rums.

I am that guy jjwest speaks of.
Last year (Jan 2010) I was in St Croix and found a couple bottles of Macorix Anejo Superior, for $8 each. There were 6, and I bought 2.
The bottles were in cardboard boxes, obviously had gotten wet, and were covered with dust, hiding behind some junk on the bottom shelf!
Each bottle, in the box, was wrapped with some kind of clear celophane-like stuff, but it melts when it gets wet, so it isn't plastic. I found them in Bendix Liquor Store is Christiansted.
While staying in C-Sted, I put the bottles on top of the fridge, and one rattled off and smashed on the floor in the middle of the night. So I had one remaining bottle.
Anyway, when I opened that and had a sip - it was GREAT! I really liked it. And I thought of the remaining bottles and how I could get them, to take them home. That didn't happen, and I had to leave the island to go bake home.
One year later I returned, to the same liquor store, and there they still there! Needless to say, I bought them all! That was a month or so ago...
Sadly I have only one today.
Here is a picture of the label. I'd like to know where to get some more of this truly great (IMO) rum.
