View Full Version : When is your rum season?

In the past few weeks I've heard that rum season was coming as soon as it gets cold. Earlier this year a number of journalists asked me to give them some ideas for rum stories before the summer rum drinking season arrived.

What do you consider to be rum season? As someone who spent years drinking rum all year round, I found the idea that there is a rum season amusing but I do find myself drinking more hot rum drinks in the winter, especially in the higher latitudes.

What do you consider rum season? Feel free to select more than one season in the poll.

The only difference in seasons for me is....well........that's funny, I can't think of one...........:p
It might be that in winter I will drink rum straight earlier in the day on the weekends, in lieu of a rum cocktail, or drink hot rum drinks. Of course in Florida, Winter is just a name we give to January......... ;)

I drink more when the summer house is open, so I consider that time - May to October - to be Rum Season, but rum is always in season for me, really.

I drink rum year-round. I have friends that believe in "Seasonal Drinking", which they define as "dark spirits in the winter, light spirits in the summer." This is just further proof to me that rum is the Alpha and Omega of spirits...even with that definition you can drink it year-round, just change which drinks you're putting it in.

Rum in cider in the winter, rum with ice, soda, and mint in the summer.

Rum is the most versatile of the distilled spirits, no other spirit is bottled as a white spirit, both unaged and aged then carbon-filtered, a dark spirit which has been aged and a black spirit colored with caramel. Rum is also flavored with all sorts of fruit and other things.

I do tend to drink more dark rum in the winter when I'm in a cold climate.

I drink rum regardless of the time of the year but I have this fantasy of sitting on the porch on a hot summer day while enjoying the concert composed by crickets. The occasional cooling breeze on the face. Time is still.

(I accidentally clicked spring when I meant summer)

Your mistake has been corrected.

I tend to drink more stong and more dark rums in the fall and winter and more fruity and lighter rum drinks in the summer. And for some reason the glasses gets taller in the summer and shorter in the winter.
As I do live in a very cold country it becomes many dark and strong drinks..:D

I drink rum all year long. I tend to drink more mixed drinks in the summer while hanging out at the pool or the beach. The rest of the year I tend to drink my rum over ice.

Like most of the other responses, I drink rum year round. The only difference in terms of seasons is ice in my punches in the warmer weather and sans ice in the cooler. It does seem that I drink more rum straight when it's cool outside than otherwise.

About the only difference is in the summer I will have a glass of ice water next to my rum neat.

I tend to drink dark aged rums in the winter and slide toward blanc rhums in the summer !!!! Not sure why but a ti punch in July is heaven but the other 11 months are OK also CHEERS !!!

I have to agree with you mac, even in the winter there's something about a ti punch when it's cold outside. In the summer I like to add some ice which I tend to omit when it's cold outside.

A Punch Vieux is a nice touch in the winter, using an amber or darker rhum agricole.

Edward Hamilton

Or a rhum vieux old fashioned. I keep a small bottle of Vya vermouth around for Manhattans another of my favorites. The large bottles don't keep very long and for only a few drinks this is the small bottles are the way to go.

i love rum old fashioned but in mine is only rum sugar angostura and orange peel, no vermouth. could you tell me your recipe?! and do you prefer rhum vieux agricol for yours or what other rums do you like for that?

Edward Hamilton

I keep the vermouth for Manhattans.
Rum Old Fashioned - 3 dashes bitters
- 1 tsp water
- 1 sugar cube
- 1 oz La Favorite Vieux
- 1 slice orange
- 1 maraschino cherry

oh, got it wrong, sorry.
yes, this is my old fashioned, too. but without the cherry - it looks nice, but it is much to sweet for me (heard of a recipe to make your own by soaking dry cherries in brandy or luxardo - should try that some day...)

but you don`t do your manhattans with rum, do you?
well, however, i am european and have never tried Vya - in about three weeks i will ask for it in my manhatten at the flatiron lounge where i will definitely go during my 3 days in ny.

I lean more towards summer and into the fall for my rum season...though since the first of the year, I've been utilizing my rum quota for 'medicinal reasons';)
Perhaps I should rephrase that as 'mental health medician reasons':o

I find my appetite for Rum is the highest in summer during the months of May to August. In the fall and spring I really lean towards Canadian Whisky. And in the dead of winter Scotch seems to dominate.

There is nothing like an ice cold Rum and Coke when the thermometer peaks, followed by a nice sipping rum in a glencairn glass after my thirst is quenched.

Whereas when the Thermometer drops below zero I like to sit in my hot tub on the deck, sipping some nice scotch like Highland Park with a touch of sprite to open the flavour.

Im glad this poll came up, its year round for me as well as edge. I find different times of the year are more prevalent for different rum drinks.

Fall-dark n stormy, and cider with mt. gay nutmeg and some maple syrup
Winter-sippers, also some soda mixers.
spring-grog, ti punch
summer-cuba libre, corn'n'oil, sippers

Well in The Bahamas (like Hank said) there are no real seasons. With the exception of a cold spell in January the weather is generally warm and sunny. I will however confess that during the heat of summer when I'm on my boat I prefer to consumer a couple thirst quenching "English Lemonades" Gin/Tonic and lemon or key lime. I also note that because summer is generally Bar B Q season, mojitoes and other cocktails become a big part of the "season".

For the rest of the year its rum and more rum. I am a RUM Man.

Good Question....Tis the season after all...

I dont have a high season for rum.....its always in season. Alright ill admit it... i LOVE a great pina coloda in the summer.....but i will still stay with my rum straight up...all year long.

I would think that the opinion of a rum "season" is coming from a non premium rum drinker.....more people will drink a cool rum drink in summer....you know...chunk of pineapple and a cherry on a stick...YAY..adult smoothies....

most people will think "hot butter rum" in the winter ....and that's not a very sexy drink....so it goes by the wayside....

Years back, I think It was was on the Howdy Doody show, there was a charactor, a female Indian princess with a long braid and a feather. (Older guys tell me if i am wrong).
Her name was "Summerfall Winterspring"

I think I'll use her as my answer here.

Baseball season is definitely more beer-centered, so I *guess* winter & fall is heavier for me wrt rum. But I don't really deal too often with absolutes.

What a peculiar notion; a rum season.

Another vote for all year round

I drink rum year round and never thought of it as seasonal. However, now that I live in a colder climate, I must confess that I probably lean slightly more toward rum cocktails in the warmer seasons. That said, there are the obligatory seasonal rum drinks that are enjoyed at wintertime.

I mix rum a bit more in the hotter months, although I don't mix rum all that much,..... but it's when I'm more apt to take a crack at it. Year round though, it's usually a beer chased with a rum sipper,...... or is it the other way around???..... I've lost track. :D

Phew, this a tough one. Being a fact, that I'm into this wonderful spirit just for like 4-6 months I can't really tell. But like said before, I think there is none in particular. Winter should be more for the heavier bodied rums and summer for cocktails and light rums, but what the heck... I think I don't even care about it, coz I just can't get enough cheers.gif... am I right or am I right?

As lit pumpkins shrivel & cower on porches in the shadows of little ghosts & gobblins, I think a warm rum drink hits the spot. I did a tasting this past weekend in NYC, featuring Clement Rhum's Harvest Punch: 2 gallons of good fresh unpasteurized apple cider, 1 bottle of Clement VSOP, 1 bottle of Clement Creole Shrubb, 4 ginger beers, Canne Sirop to taste, 4 quartered apples, 4 quartered oranges, mulling spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, orange peel, cloves & star anise, 12 cinnamon sticks. Warm do not boil in large pot for one hour, strain into thermal carafes. This should keep a party of 12 adults warm, happy and quite social for an evening of Trick or Treat inside or out.

For me there is really no season. Just the way I drink it. Summer and Spring I mix them. Fall and Winter usually just Neat or with a couple of cubes of ice.acigar

When DON'T I drink rum? Summer is when I'm more prone to beer thirsts, but slack way off in the winter, almost not touching the stuff. However with rum I am always in the mood. Perhaps since I don't drink as much beer in the winter, it would seem I drink more cocktails instead. On the other hand, more and more I prefer cocktails over beer, and if another spirit does not out-dazzle my craving otherwise, the cocktails will be rum based. On top of that, I enjoy Tiki drinks, so I'm half way reaching for a rum bottle anyway by that tendency alone (acknowledging not all Tiki drinks are made with rum).

Pretty much from noon to 3 am (on a good day).

My rumming knows no season, though like some here, I drink neat much more during the fall and winter.
