Has anybody tried this new super premium white made by the same great people who brought you Bacardi?

Rubi Rey won a silver medal in the 2007 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition. This is a real departure from Bacardi, it is smoother with a slight mineral finish. It lacks the vanilla flavor that is added to too many of the premium rums that have come to the market in recent years.

Would you compare it to a Bambu or Montecristo White?

Edward Hamilton

It would be hard to compare Rubi Rey to either of those rums, though the depth of the flavor profile is probably closer to that of Montecristo. The last time I tasted Bambu it had a lighter flavor profile than Rubi Rey.

This premium white rum gets a thumbs up from me. Very smooth texture with subtle citrus fruits on the finish. Probably aged for about 3 to 4 years and charcoal filtered to leave it's crystal clear body. Make a great Rum Martini using a zest of lemon, lime or orange.

I must weigh in on this one since I was so genuinely surprised by the great taste of this Bacardi product. Ditto on the Ambassador's tasting notes and the Minister's comparison. It's being sold widely in Denver, Colorado in all of the larger stores. The rep at Daveco told me that it would be making its way across the country, soon.

Seems like a very good white! seems good for mixing. It got to be sold in the Uk and in Germany, though not in my country.

at 86 proof and well crafted, Rubi Rey is distinguishing itself from the crowd

Where is this rum distilled / aged / bottled? Is it actually made by Bacardi at their 'complex' in PR?

If you're in London, I can get a bottle for you. Although it's not actually sold over here yet.

Yes it's made in PR. I was speaking to their Master Roneros Jose Gomez, who has been conducting various talks on Bacardi rum over here in London. It's distilled and bottled in PR. A blend of rums up to 3 years old, then charcoal filtered. His quote was, " I was allowed to get creative with this particular brand, where with other brands I had to work to a particular taste profile"

I am thrilled to see such great feedback on Rubi Rey. I am the Global Manager at Bacardi Innovations responsible for the brand. I hope I can answer some floating questions.

Rubi Rey is produced at the same plant as Bacardi in Puerto Rico, although it uses an entirely unique process. Luis Planas, Master Blender, hand selects barrels that have the proper character for his blending process. The barrels are aged 2-3 years by the open door of one of the outer warehouses so that the salt from the ocean winds increases the oak flavor. The juice then undergoes a slow filtration process and is finished in a single barrel.

Rubi Rey is the original single barrel finished white spirit, and that’s precisely what makes it smooth enough to enjoy on the rocks. At 86 proof, it carries much of the characteristics of a fine scotch.

In the 6 months since its launch, Rubi Rey has won 2 gold medals, 3 silvers and a Category Championship at the International Spirits Challenge in Sussex.

The product is available in Illinois, Florida, and Colorado, but will be expanding to more markets in time.

I'm glad that Ruby Rey is doing well, and is well received, but I have to get this off my chest. Every time I hear the name (actually, I usually read it here) I'm reminded of the character that Chris Tucker played (Ruby Rhod) in the Fifth Element.

Ruby Rhod: KORBEN DALLAS! Here he is! The one and only winner of the Gemini Croquet contest! This boy is fuuueled, like FIRE! So ladies, start melting cuz the boy is hotter than hot! He's HOT! HOT! HOT!

Sorry; just had to post this, hopefully without offense to anyone, as none's intended.

I am thinking of stopping by my favorite spirit shop today. I will pick up Rubi Rey if he has it.
It sounds like the London Rumfest is the place to be in October. If the dollar ever recovers from it's dismall postion against the pound and euro, I might consider going.
I even postponed my plans for a long trip to Martinique this year, unless there is a dollar recovery. I tolerated the $1.36 to 1 in St Barths last year, but at $1.60 to 1 it is a little difficult.

Update, no Rubi Rey at this shop today. I will look elsewhere.

I'll try and talk to Prime Minister Brown to see if he can use his old financial knowledge to help dollar against the pound, but only while you're booking your ticket for the London RumFest. You don't want Ed and myself drinking all of that good stuff by ourselves....

Don't think the idea is not rolling around in the back of my head. I would love to meet all the people from the UK that I communicate with on these forums.
I guess it is just Karma for all the years the dollar was king. The pound is about 2 to 1 against the dollar. I will have to come up with an investment strategy.....if I would stop buying rum............and cigars...........that can't happen. Ok. No food.

Tonight I am taking my first few kisses from Rubi. Quite nice! Still has some of those higher alcohol notes in the nose that I don't really care for in Barcardi. But a vast improvement none the less.

You seem to be kissing a new one every night lately. Oh, the joys of overt rum promiscuity.

Just back from PR and a visit to the Bacardi distillery - I wrote to ADB prior to going to get more info on Rubi Rey, but never heard back... Anyway, no mention of Rubi Rey at Bacardi, even when I asked about it they knew nothing of it, so they must be keeping it totally separate from the standard Bacardi line. Also could not find it anywhere in San Juan...

At least in marketing! To market this as a micro-distilled exotic product?

A "Balloon" might more describe this product..See if it floats...Bacardi doesn't micro-distill anything for release. I applaud this release..I wish I could buy it here in Puerto Rico.

that was a really memorable character. the pinnacle of his career. every time I see him, I think of that character. They should have named a rum after him - or perhaps a porno actor.

Finally today I believe that I understand the concept. Rubi Rey is styled after Starr African/Green Island. Or at least that is today's impression. g()fy

As best I can remember (Rubi Rey was one of the last rums I tried, with understandable effects and I also only had one or two sips of each rum), Rubi Rey reminded me of Jose Cuervo Gold or Durango Gold Tequilla.

Would that rum come in a short fat bottle, and have a long finish ?

I love Ruby Rey. It is one of my "go-to" rums for a great Mojito or Daiquiri. One of things that I find curious about it is that its smell holds up, intact, in the drink. It has a wonderful aroma that lingers after mixing. For me, its the closest product which I can find on store shelf in North America whish approximates Havana Club Silver (which I have heard is no longer produced, the HC, that is). It is widely available throughout Colorado. ADB, please work on California distribution! :D
