I went to the neighborhood Spec's today in Spring, TX (just North of Houston) to pick up a bottle of Zaya (I was down to a 1/2 bottle... too close to the end for me!) and learned that Spec's has discontinued carrying it. I immediately asked if there were any other Spec's close-by with stock, and they found one with five bottles. I drove straight to it and bought all five.

Anyone know what's going on? Is Spec's just discontinuing it due to poor sales? If we cannot buy it locally, can rum be shipped legally? How do we get around something like this?

I know Spec's isn't the only chain in Houston, but it is the largest. As they say around here, "If you can't get it at Spec's, you probably can't get it at all or it doesn't exist."

I get mine shipped here in TN. Laws vary state to state, and even then they may have a "dry county" no ship zip code list. I'm in a small town and it's too easy for me to just pay a little extra shipping. My last order was 3 Zacapa XO and 1 El Dorado 21 and shipping was around $16 so not too bad considering the alternative is a trip to Memphis (112 miles).

It is not being discontinued up in Ft. Worth, but that's a long drive. Hi Time wine out of southern CA ships and I have had good luck with them. Being that Specs is a chain and the spirits are probably bought by buyers in the central office, there may have just been a problem there. If "mom and pop" stores in Houston start discontinuing it, then there may be some regional thing going on.
