Just curious to hear. When it comes to cocktails / mixing rums, do some of you have strategies or organized methods as to how you'll use your rums?
Meaning, if you bring home a rum, taste it - do you have a method to decide (for example) this is something I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy with club soda, or ginger beer, or perfect for cocktail [ X ]?
Disclaimer: I'd guess 85%+ of my rum consumption is neat or at most a few drops of water & in fewer cases a cube of ice added. Realizing this, it's obvious I don't have a great deal of experience in knowing what's perfect to combine with other ingredients. So my journey in this area has been more experiment or hit & miss than science or any organized method.
To give a better idea, the major division of my rums runs more along the lines of sip-able versus not... but those that rank as "not", with the exception of a couple of standard combos that work well across the board, I have very limited organization or foresight in 'optimal' use of these. Anybody?
