I bought a bottle of this rum at the rum fest in london yesterday and have been blown away by it, i think it tastes amazing. What do other people think about this rum and how does it compare to the santa teresa 1796 as i am sadly yet to try this one?

I also love this rum....come to think of it I don't think there us a rum from Venezuela that I have not liked. To me the Diplomatico is a bit sweeter and not as complex as the 1796, but I still love it. I did a small tasting for some friends with some of my Venezualean rums (Santa Teresa 1796, Diplomatico, Pompero, Santa Teresa Grand Reserve and Ocumare Anejo) 4 out of 5 liked the Ocumare best followed by the Pampero and Diplomatico.

It is a tiny bit sweet i guess but it still seems to have quite a good kick to it.Wow that Ocumare must be amazing if all you friends preferred it to the diplimatico, i will have to look into getting myself a bottle, Venezuela really do seem to be producing some excellent rums.

I would not say the Ocumare is better tasting than the 1796 or Diplomatico, but given that it runs about $11 a bottle it is a heck of a bargain sipping rum given the taste and price of the other Venezuelan rums....this is probably my favorite everyday sipping rum.

All of these rums are very good.:D Full and rich in flavor, as it seems all Venezualan rums are. I was suprised just how good Ocumare is. I purchased it because it was so reasonable in price. This rum is a great bargain.:)
I also have a bottle of Cacique Ron Anejo from Venezuela, another bargain at $12. The Cacique is the least of the offerings though, not as polished or rich with a weaker finish. I think is is made in a different style perhaps on purpose, not as sweet with a style more like whiskey. Still not bad.

How much was the diplomatico at the rumfest? Can you get it from anywhere else in england?

Bluewave: Was it just Ocumare Anejo or Anejo 12 year?

I have never had the Cacique 500. The Ron Anejo that I have does have a hint of tequila on the nose, but the taste struck me to be a little more like a rye whiskey. The color and consistency could be compared to tequila. I will give it another taste and post my opinion.

I bought it for £30 from the whisky exchange stand, you can buy it from their website at the same price (www.thewhiskyexchange.com) or they have a shop at Vinopolis in London bridge. You can also buy it from gerry's wine and spirit shop(www.gerrys.uk.com) on compton street in soho but i think it might be a bit more expensive their.

Thanks for the info Guy :). I'll make sure I will stop by at the shops should I ever visit England.

You can get Ocumare 12 year from Spirituosen Superbillig. (http://www.spirituosen-superbillig.com/s01.php?shopid=s01&cur=eur&sp=en&ag=1&pp=aa&bnr=1728) A german netshop. I haven't ordered from there myself but I've read that most people think it is a good place. Beware though as the site is written in Gngrish.

Being from US, I was surprised to see rum being sold over the bar at Rum Experience. I wish I had realized it was legal as there were a few bottles I wish I had bought. Too bad we can't do that in the freest country in the world.

I think they might have had a special license at the festival.

Well at least you have a larger and cheaper selection in the US. According to the law here I can't even order from the internet because of the government alcohol monopoly. We get the real Havana Club and Cuban cigars though... A poor comfort however, in the sahara of rum that is Finland.

This thread makes me smile. I'm Venezuelan, and grew up going to Ocumare, a coastal town in Aragua state (same state where Stanta Teresa is produced). Boy, do I miss those days..

I love Venezuelan rums. I don't think I've had a bad one from that country yet. I almost bought Diplomatico today, but I hadn't heard of the rum before so I figured I'd check the forum first. Plus, they had a ridiculously good price on Pampero that I could not pass up.

The local store had three types of Diplomatico rums: 4 year, 8 year, and 12 year. Has anybody tried the others?

I am not sure of the age, but the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is excellent.
I think any of those mentioned would be a good choice.

By the way - we didn't need a special license to retail at RumFest. We were covered by the licensee attached to the building.

We think of our country as having outdated, draconian licensing laws!

Yes, the UK is very outdated, the government actually supports free enterprise. Importers can sell spirits to consumers without having to sell to a different distributor in each region, who then has to sell to a retailer who then sells to the consumer. But the bottom line is that spirits cost more in the UK than in the US, even considering that the US dollar is worth almost as much as a presidential promise.

The good news is that in the US there is an optimistic consensus that the coming regime change will be the catalyst for improvement in our economic situation.

Are we going to get a rum-lover in the White House?? How about one that relaxes the Cuban embargo just a little??

Thanks. I was finally able to pick up bottle of the Diplomatico R.E. at Spec's in Austin.

I was thinking of ordering from Specs since they are one of only a few places that will ship to DE but then I saw the shipping which was around $50...I guess I need to just hold off and place a really big order to justify the shipping.....I really like their selection especially the hard to find Plantation Panama and Nicaragua styles.....
