Tonight I'll do a simple ranking of several dark rums. For simplicity just a 1 to 5 system.

The 5 are:
A) Mount Gay extra old
B) JM 1997
C) Don Q Grand Anejo
D) Neisson Reserve special
E) Vizcaya VXOP

Color, darkest to lightest:
A E D B C

Nose strength:
D E B A C

Nose complexity:
DEBAC

Nose agreeability:
DABEC

Smoothness:
CEDBA

Taste strength:
EDABC

Subtle complexity:
CDBAE

Overall taste:
BDECA

Linger:
ECBDA

Final pick:
EDBCA

These are great catagories to use for a tasting. The Vizcaya is an excellent rum, a new favorite of mine. :) I have JM Special reserve, which I like quite a bit. I think the aging time is about the same, but the vintage years are usually very special. I will have to get a bottle. These were good choices for a comparison. Neisson Rhums are always on my favorite list.
I still can't get past the scorpion idea, though.............:eek:

After giving my palate a rest I went back this week in a head to head between Vizcaya and Neisson. The Vizcaya is big, bold and complex. But I found that I far prefered the Neisson for its soft richness.
