Finally made a 'pilgrimage' to Ace Beverages in DC to buy a bottle of Royal Oak.
(They had ONE bottle--also bought a bottle of Punt y Mes sweet vermouth--good luck finding either of those brands in the Virginia ABC store....)
Have not tried it yet, but am (obviously) going to sample it on its own, as well as in the Trader Vic cocktails that specifically called for this brands's predecessor, i.e., Siegert's Bouquet.
Cheers !

I think there's a bottle of Royal Oak at a liquor store across town. Since I've read good things about it as an every-day rum, I think I'll check it out too.
By the way, a little off-topic, but I've started to change my mind about Angostura 1919. This used to rank among my favorite rums, but now I find it has a bit too much vanilla. I think my taste buds have evolved since joining MoR.

I pray my tastebuds never make the same change because right now I LOVE 1919 :) I may cry if a day comes when I sip some and have a less enjoyable reaction.
Well BaltRumFan, you should try Royal Oak then. It's so similar to 1919 that I don't understand why they bother with this offering. 1919 is just a touch smoother for $10+ more. I would have expected a more significant difference.

Thanks, I have it on my list to try one day. A friend of mine up in Phili thinks he has seen it for sale in NJ. next time we take a road trip maybe we can find a bottle or two.
Even though it is so close to 1919, something with that flavor is most certainly worth some time and a taste :)

RonJames is right, like the rums you're drinking maybe you're just becoming more mature.

I heartily concur with RonJames & Ed, regarding maturing taste buds. However, I am of the belief that all such libation experiences are of the Moment, capturing the ambiance, company and most importantly your state of mind. When your happy all things tend to taste better and slide down easier. When you are upset or confused any number of things can hi-jack your senses and the tranqulity of the moment.
Point well taken, Sylbaris. I don't mean to 'dis' Angostura 1919 (or Royal Oak)-- I'm very happy to have it on my shelf. It's just that as of late, I've overdone it with some of the softer, vanilla rums (Atlantico, Vizcaya, 1919, Kraken and Mt. Gay Sugar Cane-- I'm lookin' at you). I've turned to some rums and rhums which are dryer and taste less "doctored"-- for example, rums made from fresh cane juice such as Barbancourt, Depaz, St. James and 10 Cane. Maybe it's just a phase I'm going through.

I know that this is a bit late in the game here, but for all of you who are interested in this rum and are within the DC general area, there are numerous bottles of the Royal Oak sitting on a shelf at the Westbard Montgomery Cty (MD) liquor store which is between River Rd. and Mass Ave.... about a mile beyond the DC line... $16. And I think at the MOCO store at Friendship Heights, near Clyde's, they have the 1919. Can't remember the $. Either at that one or the one in Bethesda on Hampden Lane. They are all within a few minutes of each other. Worth checking them out. Sometimes they have some great deals too. And at the one on Hampden there are a few bottles of LH 80 if interested. here's a link to all the MOCO stores and their locations etc.

$16 is a good deal, although I've seen 1919 at $19 on sale/promotion. I'm guessing that Angostura is doing pretty well with Kracken (saw a few drinks with the Kracken branding at the tex/mex chain Chevy's last week-- even got a Kracken do-hickey on my glass). Either way, with Royal Oak or 1919, you've got a solid rum you can work with. Bless Trinidad.
